The January 6 Select Committee began with a harrowing video showing the terrorists attacking the symbol of our great Democracy, our Capitol Building. The video included scenes not before seen publicly. After this powerful video, each of the officers gave their own memories and post-traumatic experiences. That remarkable video gives color and horror to their words.
Chair of the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol Bennie Thompson (D-MS) began with a brief statement then turned us to the January 6th terrorists’ attack. There were an estimated 9,400 terrorists against about 150 police officers, MSNBC reported.
One of the committee members Representative Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) explained what the committee would find:
‘[D]eficiencies in management [of the force but] that’s not what spurred the attack.’
She continued explaining:
‘What caused a mob of Americans to think that they were somehow supporting the Constitution when they tried to disrupt the constitutional process of counting the Electoral College votes? Who paid for it? How is it organized? We need to find that out to keep the country safe.’
Representative Thompson gave a warning to us about the video and then a moment of silence followed as everyone waited for it to begin. He said:
‘[It contains]Â graphic images and strong language that many may find disturbing.’
The video featured a tweet from Donald Trump building the anger in this insurrection:
‘Big protest in D.C. on January 6th. Be there, will be wild!’
The terrorists had private communications via Zello, and the officers had radio communications of the attack in real-time. One of the terrorists said on their communications channel:
‘Ok guys, apparently the tip of the spear has entered the Capitol building.’
An officer said:
‘We have been flanked and we’ve lost the line.’
Then, a rioter asked to talk to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on a Capitol phone:
‘We’re coming for you, b*tch.’
Then, we heard the voice of another mob member on their communication channel:
‘They’ve got the gallows set up outside the Capitol building. It’s time to start f*cking using them.’
We heard Chair Thompson explaining what the committee would do, as shown on C-SPAN:
‘We have to get to the bottom of finding out all the things that went wrong on Jan. 6. It will come in due time. I can’t give [the investigation] a timeline. We’ll let the facts help determine how long we will meet.’
These are the officers who testified, NPR reported:
- ‘Harry Dunn and Aquilino Gonell of the U.S. Capitol Police
- Michael Fanone and Daniel Hodges of the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police Department.’
Officer Fanone, who has been with his department for 19 years said, NPR affiliate WAMU reported:
“I remember guys chanting, ‘Kill him with his own gun.’
Officer Hodges told WAMU earlier:
‘When we were marching up through the crowd, they were all shouting at us, calling us traitors, telling us to remember our oath, stuff like that. They attacked us. Fists, trying to steal our equipment, pushing, hitting, kicking, that kind of thing.’
