Ret. Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman is among those working on garnering opposition to Trump and his enablers within the Republican Party ahead of the high-stakes elections in 2022 and 2024. Vindman, of course, first rose to particular prominence in connection to his part in the first impeachment proceedings against then-President Trump. At the time, Vindman served as part of the National Security Council, and he helped reveal the truth of how Trump sought to pressure Ukraine into investigating the Bidens. Now, Vindman has shared some of the dangers of cultish allegiance to Trump, as reflected in a fundraising text from the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC).

The NRCC is an official arm of the Republican Party that deals with races for House seats. In a text recently sent out to supporters that sought donations, the organization got remarkably aggressive, saying that it was giving recipients a “final chance to prove your loyalty or be branded a deserter.” The text added that prospective donors only had 17 minutes to respond. Obviously, the rhetoric was all essentially made up — but the NRCC was probably hoping that not all recipients could tell as much.

Vindman chimed in, observing troublingly as follows:

‘MAGA has a new purity test: give money or you’re a traitor. This is a text they sent to their supporters. Vote to defeat Trumpism.’

Are Republicans intentionally trying to lean into the perception of Trumpism as a cult? Notably, no matter the NRCC’s tying of their message to Trump, he hasn’t even formally confirmed that he’ll run for president again in 2024, although that certainly seems like the more likely option. In the meantime, although Democrats are focusing on ambitious agenda items like passing infrastructure bills to support the needs of the American people, Trump and his cronies within the GOP are remaining full of themselves. In a recent statement, Trump insisted that the main issue heading into future elections was “solving” the imaginary fraud that he claims was responsible for Biden’s 2020 win. As he put it, if “we don’t solve the Presidential Election Fraud of 2020 (which we have thoroughly and conclusively documented), Republicans will not be voting in ‘22 or ‘24. It is the single most important thing for Republicans to do.” That’s his focus: self-obsession.
