Trump Has Terrified Sounding Wednesday Meltdown As DOJ Closes In

As one might expect, Trump isn’t taking well to the recent FBI search of Mar-a-Lago, his southern Florida property where he’s largely resided since leaving the White House.

The raid was connected to a Justice Department investigation into the handling of classified documents from the Trump administration. The National Archives previously said it found classified materials in over a dozen boxes of presidential records from Trump’s administration it recovered from Mar-a-Lago, and the Monday search of the property was meant at least in part to uncover if presidential records that federal law required be provided to U.S. record-keeping authorities were still at the premises. After discovering classified material, the National Archives referred the matter to the Justice Department for further examination, where a grand jury investigation started. The FBI left Mar-a-Lago on Monday with about a dozen additional boxes, although it’s unclear, of course, what was in those boxes.

Trump and key figures around him promptly began characterizing the FBI showing up at Mar-a-Lago as some kind of egregious breach of the peace emblematic, they said, of something that would happen in “third world countries.” (For some reason, that or something like it is favored phrasing in Trump’s corner.) On Wednesday, Trump suggested federal agents might have planted evidence at Mar-a-Lago, something for which there is, of course, no apparent real-world evidence whatsoever.

“The FBI and others from the Federal Government would not let anyone, including my lawyers, be anywhere near the areas that were rummaged and otherwise looked at during the raid on Mar-a-Lago,” Trump complained on Wednesday on his platform Truth Social. “Everyone was asked to leave the premises, they wanted to be left alone, without any witnesses to see what they were doing, taking or, hopefully not, “planting.” Why did they STRONGLY insist on having nobody watching them, everybody out? Obama and Clinton were never “raided,” despite big disputes!” Trump wasn’t raided because of a “dispute.” Mar-a-Lago was searched because federal law enforcement personnel showed the appropriate probable cause to a court, and in a broader sense, his property was searched because of accompanying tangible evidence suggesting criminal activity.

“What took place yesterday, and long before, was an unprecedented infringement of the rights of every American citizen,” Trump added in a Tuesday post. “Scam after Scam, year after year, it is all the Radical Left Democrats really know, it is their lifeblood – they have no shame. Our Country is paying a very big price!!!” In another notable allegation, Trump insisted that President Joe Biden “knew all about this,” although there’s no real-world evidence for that notion either. Quite simply, it’s not some kind of shocking and devastating affront to the public’s trust for Trump to face the same standards as millions of other Americans. For a former president to somehow avoid even the possibility of accountability would likely prove more jarring to the foundations of democracy than duly supported law enforcement activity like what unfolded this week.
