The National Counsel Of Churches Just Turned Against Republicans

As Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, proved during his confirmation hearings, there’s nothing Christ-like about the GOP. In fact, their attacks on a woman who came forward to report sexual assault and their vicious taunting and anger toward her ever since has angered many, including many in the Christian church.

The largest council of Christian churches in our country, including memberships of more than 40 denominations, The National Council of Churches (NCC), posted a statement on their website today calling for the withdrawal of Kavanaugh’s nomination.

‘Judge Kavanaugh exhibited extreme partisan bias and disrespect towards certain members of the committee and thereby demonstrated that he possesses neither the temperament nor the character essential for a member of the highest court in our nation.’

As Kavanaugh told lie after lie and spit out his anger at being challenged by questions of his earlier behaviors toward women, he lost the support of the church. However, even outside that hearing, his record as a judge was concerning to a religion that believes in love and acceptance for all, especially those in need.

‘Judge Kavanaugh’s extensive judicial and political record is troubling with regard to issues of voting rights, racial and gender justice, health care, the rights of people with disabilities, and environmental protections. This leads us to believe that he cannot be an impartial justice in cases that are sure to come before him at the Court.’

Even Kavanaugh’s own personal church, the Jesuits, published statements in their national publication, American Magazine, has called for him to withdraw his name from consideration.

‘The question is not solely about Judge Kavanaugh’s responsibility, nor is it any longer primarily about his qualifications. Rather it is about the prudence of his nomination and potential confirmation. In addition to being a fight over policy issues, which it already was, his nomination has also become a referendum on how to address allegations of sexual assault.’

It seems that everyone can see the disaster that threatens should the GOP follow through on seating Kavanaugh, except of course the GOP themselves, who are willing to take any steps imaginable to get a political ally on the bench.
