Sen. Lindsey Graham pulled no punches in an interview, Tuesday, on CNN’s “New Day,” telling host Alisyn Camerota that Americans who want to “make America great again” should tell the “race-baiting, xenophobic” Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump to “go to hell.”
When Camerota asked Graham, “What is your reaction to hearing what Donald Trump says?” Graham responded point-blank, “Disgusted.”
The bipartisan backlash from which Trump is now feeling a distinct sting comes after his recent comments calling for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.” The comment has sparked so much instantaneous outrage that most folks completely missed Trump’s second outrageous statement calling for shutting down “that Internet.”
Graham then told Camerota, “I want to talk to the Trump supporters for a minute.” He continued, “I don’t know who you are and why you like this guy. He’s going to take all of the problems of the world and put them in a box and make your life better. That’s what he’s selling.” But, Graham stated, “Here’s what you’re buying. He’s a race-baiting, xenophobic religious bigot. He doesn’t represent my party. He doesn’t represent the values that the men and women who wear the uniform are fighting for.”
Graham also pointed out that while folks may be drawn to Trump’s confidence bolstered by his massive ego, “He’s the ISIL Man of the Year.” Graham also stated, “The enemy will use that rhetoric against us” in order to radicalize more people, especially the young and easily persuaded.
Trump is the best Daesh recruitment tool out there. In light of that, he makes himself a traitor to the U.S., yet he is running for the presidency, and his false promises have so many Republicans lulled into the fantasy Graham rightly pointed out Trump sells that they don’t see it. This is how fascism takes over a country, and history shows it can happen just this fast.
Graham continued on in the interview indicating that the way to “win this war,” much as President Obama’s recent speech indicated, the United States and the western world will need to win over the hearts and minds of our Muslim brothers and sisters, which is to say we must love them, embrace them and offer the solidarity – show them that we understand that Muslims as a whole are no more to blame for terrorism brought on by the Daesh than Christians are to blame for people like the Planned Parenthood shooter and the KKK.
Graham ended the interview by stating, “And do you know how you make America great again? You tell Donald Trump to go to hell.”
It’s good to see some Republicans have a conscience. Keep it up!
