After the Democratic National Committee with Debbie Wasserman Schultz at the helm, suspended access to the party’s voter database to Bernie Sanders — in what many considered to be sabotage – progressives are rising up against the punishment she generously heaped onto the Sanders’ campaign.
Bernie Sanders’ campaign quickly and filed a 12-page lawsuit with the U.S. Court for the District of Columbia claiming that the loss of access to the voter file amounts to “damage and financial losses … that are incapable of precise calculation, but exceed $600,000.00 per day.”
The complaint further argues that the “loss of DNC support could significantly disadvantage, if not cripple, a Democratic candidate’s campaign for public office.”
Supporters of Bernie Sanders are pushing to remove Schultz from her position and a petition has quickly garnered 32,314 signatures at Change.org and there are just under 44,000 signatures at MoveOn.org.
Change.org’s petition reads:
During this election season, Debbie Wasserman Schultz has demonstrated the utmost sense of contempt and disdain for the Democratic Party, its principles, and the democratic process. Instead of treating each Democratic candidate fairly and equally, she has used her position to manipulate the electoral process in favor of Hillary Clinton.
From her decision to severely limit the number of Democratic debates to her decision this week to cut off the Sanders campaign’s access to voter files critical to the running of his campaign, Debbie Wasserman Schultz has demonstrated that her priority is not to represent the Democratic Party as a whole, but to exclusively serve the interests of the Clinton campaign.
She has brought shame upon herself, on her position, and on the name “Democrat”. She has run the DNC in a manner that is contrary to its principles and has betrayed the party as a whole.
Sign this petition demanding her immediate resignation to retake the Democratic Party and restore it to its founding principles.
We the people of the Democratic Party do respectfully request your immediate resignation from your position as Chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.
MoveOn.org’s petition states in part:
Every second that this leadership is in place is another second the Democratic Party has conceded congress to the Republican party.
It’s not just the latest controversy.
The Democratic National Committee Chair was previously reluctant to vote in favor of the nuclear agreement with Iran while President Obama was struggling to obtain votes to preserve the deal.
Debbie Wasserman Schultz was in the midst of a backlash then, too.
The Sanders’ staffer who had looked at the Clinton campaigns information during a 30-minute glitch in NGP VAN, the vendor that handles the DNC’s voter data, was fired immediately.
While there was inappropriate action taken by someone on Sanders’ campaign staff, many see her and the party using this as an attempt to silence Sanders.
Campaign staff for Sanders regained access voter data provided by the Democratic National Committee but some feel that Wasserman Schultz is playing politics within the party.
While Hillary Clinton supporters may find Wasserman Schultz’s actions to be fair, she attempted to deny Sanders due process in the matter.
Or perhaps some people within the Democratic party don’t want to give a choice as to who to vote for.
