Details are emerging this weekend about a man “who owned hundreds of guns” and allegedly shot and killed two women and one man in his Los Angeles County home before he was shot to death by his own son on New Year’s Day.
Los Angeles County Sheriff‘s deputies were called to the residence at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday following a report of a gunshot victim, said Lt. John Saleeby of the sheriff’s Walnut Station.
“There was moaning heard in the background,” Saleeby said.
My News LA reports:
“Investigators said it appears that a 54-year-old man, identified as Michael Morey, shot and killed three people: 27-year-old Ernesto Calzadilla, 46- year-old Linda Merrell and 54-year-old Betty Morey.”
“According to witnesses, all but one of the victims was staying at the residence,” Deputy Trina Schrader of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau told City News Service.”
“A semi-automatic handgun, which police believe is the murder weapon, was recovered at the scene, she added., killing him.”
After the three people were shot dead, the shooter’s 33-year-old son, Christopher Morey, allegedly shot and killed his father, Schrader said.
The father’s victims were identified as the man’s 54-year-old wife, his son’s 48-year-old girlfriend and the 27-year-old man who was visiting, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department said.
Morey was arrested for suspicion of murdering his father, booked at the Walnut Sheriff’s Station, and held in lieu of $1 million bail, she said.
This is a somewhat baffling case since clearly the son was acting in self-defense after watching his father murder his family, including his bedridden mother and his girlfriend.
According to investigators, those in the house had been drinking prior to the shooting, and there was an argument that took place earlier in the day between the father and his son’s girlfriend over her use of a washing machine.
“It looks like it was a dispute between the dad and the son’s girlfriend, probably over using the washing machine,” Sheriff’s Lt. John Corina said. “For some reason, this set the dad off.”
“That was his girlfriend (who was shot). That’s why he went all crazy,” a friend of Morey’s said.
Calzadilla’s father, Ronald Calzadilla, said the shooter owned hundreds of guns and would walk around the house with an AK-47 after having several beers.
The father was reportedly a heavy drinker and authorities had made dozens of previous trips to the residence, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said.
So a bad guy with a gun was killed by a good guy with a gun who wrestled the firearm away from the ‘bad guy’ and the good guy is being held on $1 million bail.
Gun lobbyists’ talking points are getting really confusing. The body count is through the roof and it’s only the second day of the new year.
