Hopefully Barack Obama’s new executive order on gun control will make the U.S. a little safer for those of us who would prefer to be as far away from firearms as possible. In the meantime, here’s a list of all 50 states, plus the District of Columbia, ordered by how many guns per capita they have. The states with the most guns are..

51. New York
If fewer guns per capita is a reliable measure of safety, New York is the safest state in the union with 3.3 guns per 1000 residents. That’s 64,353 registered guns for 19,651,127 people.

50. Rhode Island
Next up is Rhode Island, with only 3.8 guns per 1000 people. 3,973 registered guns for 1,051,511 people.

49. Delaware
For every 1,000 people in Delaware, there are 4.2 guns. 3,907 registered guns for 925,749 people.

48. Michigan
Michigan comes in next, with 4.3 guns for every 1000 people. That’s 42,855 guns for 9,895,622 people.

47. Massachusetts
At #47 is Massachusetts, with 4.9 guns for every 1,000 residents. That’s 32,682 registered weapons for 6,692,824 people.

46. Hawaii
There are 7,105 registered guns for 1,404,054 people in Hawaii, coming in at 5.1 guns per 1000 residents.

45. New Jersey
New Jersey has 5.8 guns for every 1000 residents. That’s 51,670 registered guns for 8,899,339 people.

44. Iowa
There are currently 6.1 guns for every 1,000 residents in Iowa. 18,880 weapons for 3,090,416 people.

43. Vermont
For every 1,000 residents in Vermont, there are 6.4 guns. 626,630 people and 4,032 guns.

42. Mississippi
Mississippi comes in lower on the list than you might expect, with 6.8 guns per 1,000 residents. 2,991,207 people and 20,389 firearms.

41. Nebraska
In Nebraska there are 13,864 guns for 1,868,516 people. That’s 7.4 guns per 1,000 residents.

40. California
My state of California comes in at 7.6 guns per 1,000 residents, and 292,877 registered firearms for 38,332,521 people.

39. Wisconsin
For every 1,000 residents in Wisconsin, there are 7.8 guns divided among them. That means 5,742,713 people and 44,705 weapons.

38. Missouri
In Missouri, there are 6,044,171 residents, and 51,550 guns. That’s 8.5 guns for every 1,000 people.

37. Washington
In Washington, there are 8.6 guns for every 1,000 people. That’s 60,009 registered firearms between 6,971,406 people.

36. Maine
For Maine, we’ve got 8.7 guns for every 1,000 residents. 11,509 registered firearms and 1,328,302 people.

35. Illinois
118,295 registered guns between 12,882,135 people means 9.2 guns per 1,000 residents in Illinois.

34. West Virginia
Every 1,000 residents in West Virginia have 9.4 guns divided between them. 17,429 guns, and 1,854,304 people.

33. Arizona
Arizona is tied with West Virginia with 9.4 guns per 1,000 people, but there are more because of Arizona’s higher population. 62,527 firearms, and 6,626,624 people.

32. North Dakota
North Dakota has 9.5 guns for every 1,000 residents. That’s 6,863 weapons and 723,393 people.

31. Minnesota
Minnesota ties with North Dakota. There are 9.5 guns for every 1,000 people living there. That’s 51,658 registered weapons and 5,420,380 people.

30. Florida
At #30, we have Florida with 10.2 guns for every 1,000 people. With 19,552,860 people, that means they have 199,828 registered firearms.

29. Kansas
In Kansas, there are 11 guns for every 1,000 residents. That makes 2,893,957 people with 31,926 guns spread among them.

28. North Carolina
North Carolina has 11.1 guns for every 1,000 residents. With 109,388 weapons spread between 9,848,060 people.

27. Tennessee
At #25 we have Tennessee with 11.3 weapons for every 1,000 people. Among 6,495,978 people that’s 73,320 guns.

26. Montana
Coming in at a tie with Tennessee, Montana also has 11.3 guns for ever 1,000 residents. That’s 11,461 guns for the 1,015,165 people living there.

25. Connecticut
Surprisingly, Connecticut is tied with Tennessee and Montana, also with 11.3 guns for every 1,000 residents, at 40,740 registered firearms distributed among 3,596,080 people.

24. Oregon
Oregon has 11.4 guns for every 1,000 residents, and 44,811 guns distributed among 3,930,065 people.

23. Ohio
Oregon and Ohio are tied with 11.4 guns for every 1,000 residents. That comes in at 131,990 guns for 11,570,808 people.

22. South Dakota
At #22, South Dakota comes in, and has 11.5 guns for every 1,000 residents. 9,677 weapons dispersed between 844,877 people.

21. South Carolina
South Carolina has 11.6 guns for 1,000 people, or 55,286 guns for every 4,774,839 residents.

20. Colorado
Colorado’s 12 guns for every 1,000 residents soundly edges out South Carolina despite the states’ similar populations. They’ve got 63,178 guns for every 5,268,367 people.

19. Oklahoma
States in the south and midwest tend to top this list. Oklahoma has 12.3 guns for every 1,000 people, with 47,419 registered firearms for the 3,850,568 people living there.

18. Texas
While undoubtedly disappointed not to be higher on the list, Texas comes in at #18 with 12.8 guns for every 1,000 people. They’ve got 337,309 guns and 26,448,193 people living there. Yeehaw!

17. Utah
In Utah, there are 12.9 guns and 37,490 firearms registered between 2,900,872 people.

16. Kentucky
At #16, Kentucky comes in with 13.5 guns registered per 1,000 people. That’s 59,240 guns and 4,395,295 people.

15. Indiana
They’ve got 14.1 guns for every 1,000 residents in Indiana, with 92,700 registered guns between 6,570,902 people.

14. New Hampshire
With 14.6 guns for every 1,000 people, New Hampshire comes in at #14. They’ve got 19,284 registered firearms and 1,323,459 people.

13. Georgia
Another surprise, Georgia ties with New Hampshire with 14.6 guns for every 1,000 people. They have 145,412 guns, and 9,992,167 people.

12. Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania comes in with 15 guns for every 1,000 people. That’s 192,037 registered guns and 12,802,503 people.

11. Maryland
With a tie for number 11 with Pennsylvania, Maryland has 15 guns for every 1,000 residents as well. They’ve got 88,732 registered firearms for 5,928,814 people.

10. Louisiana
Not surprisingly, Louisiana enters the top ten with 15.1 guns for every 1,000 people, just barely edging out Maryland and Pennsylvania. They’ve got 69,668 registered guns and 4,625,470 people.

9. Alaska
Alaska has 15.2 guns for every 1,000 residents. That’s 11,167 weapons registered to 735,132 people.

8. Nevada
At number 8, Nevada has 19.5 guns for every 1,000 people. They have 54,436 registered firearms and 2,790,136 people.

7. Alabama
Alabama has 20 guns for every 1,000 people living there. They’ve got 96,744 registered firearms, and 4,833,722 people.

6. Idaho
Idaho’s got 24.2 guns for every 1,000 residents. They have 39,019 registered firearms and 1,612,136 people.

5. Virginia
The numbers start to explode as we get into the top 5. Virginia comes in at number 5 with 30.1 guns for every 1,000 residents. They’ve got 248,939 registered firearms and 8,260,405 people.

4. New Mexico
At 40.5 guns for every 1,000 people, New Mexico has 84,471 registered firearms and 2,085,287 people.

3. Arkansas
With 41.6 guns for every 1,000 residents, Arkansas has 123,130 registered firearms and 2,959,373 people.

2. District of Columbia
DC’s got 66.4 guns for every 1,000 people living there. That means they’ve got 42,897 firearms and 646,449 people.

1. Wyoming
And we have a winner! Not surprisingly, it’s rural and sparsely populated Wyoming where hunters and ranchers no doubt have great need for a large assortment of firearms. They’ve got a whopping 195.7 guns for every 1,000 people there, but that’s only 114,052 guns divided between 582,658 folks.

Not surprisingly, the states with high per-capita gun deaths tend to be the ones that not only have a high number of guns per capita, but also with densely packed urban populations. Let’s hope Obama’s actions on gun control manage to drop these numbers a little bit.
