Texas Senator and presidential hopeful, Ted Cruz distanced himself from the armed “activists” currently occupying a federal building in Burns, Oregon last week, asking them to “stand down” and exercise their right to protest in a way that is a little less militant than literally organizing a “militia” and occupying federal land for an indefinite period of time.
Regardless, it is interesting that the Texas Senator, despite the expected distance he has placed between his own ideological positions and that of the Oregon militants, has not thoughtfully considered whether or not some of his own incendiary language may have had something to do with at least emboldening the militants and other far-right “activist” groups throughout the United States.
This is why I’d like to invite you to play a little game of “Who Said It.” Below are 10 quotes from Senator Cruz and some of the Oregon militants who have spoken publicly about what they are doing and why. Your goal is to guess who actually said the quote: the Texas Senator or one of the Oregon militants. None of this is to say that Cruz in any way endorses the actions of the militants or vice-versa. This is simply to point out certain “resemblances” between the two that are worth discussing.
Good luck! Answers are below.
