Everyone has heard the rumors about the original Aunt Vivian from “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” Janet Hubert, how she detests Will Smith, and how their rivalry brought an end to her position on the cast. Now she has set her sights on Will’s wife, Jada Pinket-Smith, and boy did she ever have a mouthful to say.
This all began when Jada Smith released a statement on Sunday asking Black people to boycott the Oscars due to a lack of racial diversity among those nominated. In Smith’s very polite and respectful video, she expresses her frustration over the snubbing of Black actors from the Academy’s award nominations this year. Basically, Pinket-Smith is fed up with working in a White industry where:
‘..people of color are always welcomed to give out awards … even entertain, but we are rarely recognized for our artistic accomplishments. Should people of color refrain from participating all together? People can only treat us in the way in which we allow. With much respect in the midst of deep disappointment.’
Hubert found Jada’s choice of social topics to be lacking in substance. She launched into a verbal attack on the actress on MLK Day, with her first words to Smith being, “First of all, Miss Thing. Does your man not have a mouth of his own with which to speak?”
Now I am sure she didn’t mean to be rude. (Ahem) Aunt Viv has always has always been able to turn people off pretty quickly, but this time she went straight for the jugular. Hubert continued:
‘Girlfriend, there are a lot of shit going in the world that you all don’t seem to recognize. People are dying, our boys are being shot left and right, people are hungry, people are starving, people are trying to pay bills, and you’re talking about some muthaf— actors and Oscars. It ain’t that deep.’
While I understand what she’s trying to say, every cause for humanity is a noble and worthy cause, and for Hubert to take out her extremely old hatred of Smith’s husband on Jada is completely uncalled for and childish. Hubert says that Will and Jada should realize:
‘You ain’t Barack and Michelle Obama. And y’all need to get over yourselves. You have a huge production company that you only produce your friends and family and yourself. So you are a part of Hollywood, you are part of the system that is unfair to other actors. So get real.’
Sounds like someone is still just a little butt-hurt from losing her job on a hugely successful hit sitcom that still airs re-runs daily.
