Ted Cruz is obviously not a man to be outdone. After Donald Trump received endorsements last week from the laughingstock of Saturday Night Live (Sarah Palin) and an anti-Muslim war criminal (Vojislav Seselj), Mother Jones reports that Ted Cruz is now touting his most recent endorsement from Mike Bickle, the founder and director of the International House of Prayer of Kansas City.
What’s wrong with Mike Bickle? Doesn’t being founder and director of a church seem like a pretty innocuous position?
Well, it does until you find out that IHOP is more cult than church.
And when you find out that Mike Bickle thinks same-sex marriage is a signal of the end of times.
And that he thinks Oprah Winfrey is a charming, kind, reasonable forerunner of the Antichrist.
And that he thinks the Holocaust was the fault of the millions of Jews who were slaughtered. According to Bickle, if they had just accepted God’s gift of Jesus, everything would have been fine.
So yes, there are some issues with Mike Bickle. There are also some issues with Ted Cruz (besides what we already knew) because he thinks that Bickle is an impressive endorser.
Regarding this new endorsement, Cruz said, “Through prayer, the Lord has changed my life and altered my family’s story. I am grateful for Mike’s dedication to call a generation of young people to prayer and spiritual commitment…With the support of Mike and many other people of faith, we will fight the good fight, finish the course, and keep the faith.”
It seems that the Republican candidates are having some kind of not-so-secret competition to see who can catch the most ludicrous endorsers, and it’s tough to say who is winning. Needless to say, though, it is frightening that people like Cruz and Trump have supporters, and it is even more frightening Bickle and Seselj have supporters of their own that they are bringing into Cruz and Trump’s respective folds.
Cruz might not necessarily believe all that Bickle preaches, but he certainly doesn’t oppose his teachings enough to not want an endorsement from him. That fact, in and of itself, should be enough to make everyone at least a little concerned about the possibility (however slim) that Cruz could become president of the United States.
