Suicidal LGBT Kids In Oklahoma Prevented From Seeing Gay-Friendly Counselor

My first thought is that Oklahoma is intentionally letting their LGBT kids kill themselves. Too harsh? Not when you see what that conservative-heavy legislature is trying to do to them. One of the hardest things I ever did was jump off of a 200-foot cliff on a zip line. I believe, it is immensely more difficult for kids to come out in the LGBT-hating world of conservatives.

Apparently, their fear is well-placed, because the Oklahoma extremist government is trying to pass a cruel bill that would prevent LGBT kids from getting gay-affirming counseling at school. Check out what the legislature tries to do:

1. HB 1598: Protects Ex-gay Conversion Therapy.

This devil’s deal bill before congress says that parents can seek counseling to change a gay child’s sexual orientation, and the state cannot interfere.

“Sexual orientation change efforts” or “conversion therapy” will be considered HB1598 Oklahoma law, and this bizarre treatment will be legitimate:

‘”Aversion therapy” means any counseling by a mental health provider that exposes or asks a client or patient to undergo physical pain, such as electroshock or electroconvulsive therapy, touch therapy, pornography exposure or vomit-induction therapy, in order to change sexual behaviors or gender-identity expressions and/or to eliminate or reduce sexual or romantic attractions or feelings toward individuals of the same sex.’

House Bill Name: Counseling; creating the Parental and Family Rights in Counseling Protection Act; emergency.

2. HB 3044: Prevents Depressed And Suicidal LGBT Youth From Seeing A Gay-Affirmative Counselor.

Naturally, if your whole family hates your gay brother or sister, the kid is going to be depressed. These kids face a higher rate of clinical depression, anxiety, and suicide.

Imagine how it would feel to live with parents who hate and revile you. Then, imagine what would happen if they forced you to stay away from anyone supportive of you. That’s current-day shunning of the worst sort.

Oklahoma prevents kids from finding any solace from gay-affirming therapists. In fact, the bills says any counselor must notify the kid’s parents they are gay and gives them time to try to change them. This bill says:

‘[No public school] counselor, therapist, social worker, administrator, teacher or other individual” can “refer a student under the age of eighteen” to any “individual, organization or entity” if the referral “pertain[s] to human sexuality.’

‘[No public school counselor can] provide the contact information, business card, brochure or other informational materials.’

The torment does not end when a kid goes away to college, either. An Oklahoma law that passed in 2014 makes it legal for student groups to discriminate against gays, all on the taxpayers’ dime.

House Bill Name: Schools; prohibiting certain referrals or providing information to students without notifying parents or guardians; effective date; emergency.

3. SB 733: Forbids HIV-Positive People Marrying.

This Oklahoma bill intends to force all people who want to get married to take a blood test checking for “communicable or infectious diseases.” Then, if one is found, the state will deny them a marriage license. Unfortunately, some gays are more at risk for HIV, a blood-borne disease.

Is it legal? No, people are protected under the ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) purview. That means the Supreme Court will not allow it.

Senate Bill Name: Infectious diseases; requiring submission of certain documents prior to issuance of marriage license.

Oklahoma, why are your legislators trying to kills your kids? Ask them.
