It’s hard to believe that just a couple of months ago, Ben Carson was nipping at the heels of frontrunner Donald Trump in the polls. His star was ascending rapidly, and he was a very hot political commodity.

And then Carson began with the crazy talk, saying that the pyramids in Egypt were actually grain storage silos built by the Biblical figure Joseph. While he was at it, the retired neurosurgeon also remarked that the solution to the problem of illegal immigration from Mexico might be to use drones and take out those crossing the border with a Hellfire missile.

The Carson campaign has been in free fall ever since, and last night in Iowa, shortly after Carson placed a distant fourth, he went in front of supporters and began to sound like the late Richard Nixon, blaming others for his own inability to do any better in the GOP caucus. Here’s part of what Carson said:

I was reasonably happy today until I discovered the dirty tricks that were going on.

And people spreading rumors that I had dropped out and that people should caucus for somebody else. I mean, do you think that that is something that’s acceptable?

Apparently no one ever told Dr. Carson that all is fair in love, war, and politics. Politics is a contact sport, and if someone tackles you hard, you just have to get up and prepare yourself for the next play.

But rather than doing that, Carson headed home for what he said was some much-needed rest. Meanwhile, his opponents are on to New Hampshire while he sits at home, sulks, and realizes that he has zero chance of being elected to any office. But he did manage to fire off an email to his supporters before he got on the plane to depart Iowa:

For months, my campaign has survived the lies and dirty tricks from opponents who profess to detest the games of the political class, but in reality are masters at it.

Even tonight, my opponents resorted to political tricks by tweeting, texting and telling precinct captains to announce that I had suspended my campaign – in some cases asking caucus goers to change their votes.

Expect Carson to exit the 2016 race within the next week or two. Watch this video of him and you’ll see why he’s out of any viability as a candidate:
