WTF: Republicans Withhold Flint Aid So Sen. Democrats Hold Energy Bill Hostage

Today, I love my Democrat Senators for standing with Flint, Michigan, against the Republicans. The R boys didn’t want to send emergency aid to Flint to alleviate their dire water crisis, and our side stiffened their spines and said “No!” They blocked the Republican’s energy bill. My God, how in the hell can Republicans justify withholding help?

Every day that Flint children are exposed to the lead that pours out of their taps is one day that the poison further damages their ability to learn, their physical health, and their capacity to function in this world. What kind of people would perpetuate such pain, suffering, and yes, death?

Unfortunately, we know the sad answer to that question. Republicans have no qualms about further wounding 100,000 citizens in this country.

So, my Democrats blocked an energy bill and left the Republicans 16 votes shy of what they needed to pass it. Yes!

Harry Reid, D-Nev., Senate Minority Leader, dressed down the party of the rich for their hypocrisy:

‘Last year Texas was devastated with historic flooding, it was the federal government that stepped in to provide disaster relief for the people of Texas.’

‘Who stepped in? The federal government stepped in to help the people of Texas.’

‘That’s why I was disappointed to see the senior Senator from Texas say: While we all have sympathy for what’s happened in Flint this is primarily a local and state responsibility.’

‘He didn’t say that when the flooding was taking place last year.’

‘Last year as Florida was hit with extreme flooding, the Senator who finished third last night in the Iowa caucuses called for federal disaster assistance.’

‘But when it comes to the children and families of Flint, that Senator instead cautions against our action.’

‘He said he had not followed the situation closely but that: I believe the federal government’s role in some of these things (is) largely limited unless it involves a federal jurisdictional issue.’

‘Senator Rubio is not alone. Republican Senators routinely rush to the floor to demand federal aid when trouble hits their backyard.’

‘That’s the right thing to do – Americans help each other in times of crisis.’

‘This week, the Senate has a chance to help the families suffering through a public health crisis, I hope Republicans who have requested federal aid in the past won’t turn their backs on the people of Flint.’

‘If a federal government response is necessary for natural disasters, shouldn’t the federal government help respond to this man-made disaster?’

Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters of Michigan promised they would block the energy bill, and hold it hostage until the Senate agreed to an amendment of aid for Flint.

So, what did the Republican senators do? They slimed, trying to steal funding from one Michigan program to pay for Flint’s crisis. Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., proclaimed that money for Flint should come out of the vehicle manufacturing loan program. Excuse me? Is he joking?

The Democratic senators are standing strong with Flint, insisting that the poisoning of its water is not a “local issue,” and they will continue blocking the energy bill, until they get what Flint needs.

Finally, Democrats, you must have long memories when Republicans inevitably want disaster relief for their state. Make them squirm, then do the right thing.
