In case you’ve been living under a rock, there’s a water crisis occurring in Flint, Michigan, and thus far, Republicans have been inactive on the situation. This was the GOP’s moment and they’re dragging their feet in aiding the diverse town after its water supply was poisoned. Not only should the blame be placed at Gov. Rick Snyder’s feet but Senate Democrats had to block a major energy policy bill Thursday after failing to convince Republicans to attach an aid package addressing the drinking-water crisis in Flint, Mich.
After the crises garnered media attention, Tea Party Rep. Justin Amash opposed federal intervention and assistance for the city.
Michigan state officials were aware of an increase in Legionnaires’ disease cases and a possible tie to the city’s water supply at least 10 months before Gov. Rick Snyder informed the public of the situation last month, according to the New York Times.
A top Genesee County health official says the state did nothing when he repeatedly alerted them about an extreme spike in Legionnaires’ disease cases, according to WJRT.
But today, the Michigan Republican party is portraying Gov. Rick Snyder (R) as the man at the helm who has been busy trying to heal the city of Flint while the Evil Obama administration has only stood in the way.
The fact that the crisis was created by Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder’s (R) administration and his emergency manager in Flint – local Democratic officials had no decision-making authority – was a detail the Texas Republican appears to have missed.
But if Cruz exploiting a man-made disaster for partisan gain seemed crude, the Michigan Republican Party has him beat. The Huffington Post reported today:
The Michigan Republican Party would like you to know that Gov. Rick Snyder (R) has been busy trying to heal the city of Flint while the malevolent Obama administration has only stood in the way.
That’s the message of an infographic the state party started putting out on social media on Thursday. The light blue water droplets on the left represent actions Snyder has taken since October, when his administration admitted its own mistakes created a crisis in Flint, a city whose 100,000 residents still can’t drink the water because of high lead levels. The dark blue droplets supposedly show unhelpful actions taken by the Obama administration, such as the refusal to declare a federal disaster area in the state (it declared an emergency instead).
The Huffington Post reports:
Another dark blue droplet complains the Obama administration denied Snyder’s request to expand a federal nutrition program for moms with young kids so that more Flint children could have access. But federal data show that statewide, the Snyder administration is only connecting half of eligible kids to the program to begin with.
The city of Flint’s water source was switched in April 2014 in order to save money and since then the water has had rising, dangerous lead levels as well as unsafe levels of fecal coliform bacteria.
Then a wave of Legionnaires’ disease cases occurred and ten people have died with another 77 affected. And all of the illnesses and deaths are brought to you courtesy of the Snyder administration.
