Donald Trump’s parade of ridiculousness, paranoia, and xenophobia marches on. Yesterday, in an interview with Fox Business Network, Donald Trump described Pope Francis as “a very political person,” and then went on to accuse him of secretly being in cahoots with the Mexican government.
Trump has made it no secret how he feels about immigration into the United States. In fact, he kicked off his campaign by calling Mexican immigrants rapists. He hasn’t let up on this position since, and continues to use xenophobic, anti-immigration rhetoric to persuade other xenophobic, racist Americans to join his team.
Trump’s comments are a response to Pope Francis’s six-day visit — which began today — to Mexico, where he plans to hold a cross-border mass in Ciudad Juarez, on a site less than 300 miles from the United States border. According to Trump, the pope’s visit to Mexico has little to do with his religious beliefs. Instead, his visit is meant to stop the United States from taking tougher action against immigration.
Regarding the pope and the current matter, Trump specifically said:
‘I don’t think he understands the danger of the open border that we have with Mexico. I think Mexico got him to do it because they want to keep the border just the way it is. They’re making a fortune, and we’re losing.’
Logical? Not at all. But then again, has The Donald ever shown any signs of being a logical being? He also either doesn’t know or doesn’t care — both options are equally likely — that more immigrants are currently leaving the United States than are entering.
This isn’t the first time that Donald Trump has attacked the pope, either. In August of last year, in an interview with CNN’s Chris Cuomo, when asked about what he had to say to the pope regarding his feelings about Capitalism, Trump responded:
‘I would say, ISIS wants to get you. You know that ISIS wants to go in and take over the Vatican?’
There is not actually any proof that ISIS has any intentions to take over the Vatican, but since when has a silly thing like evidence mattered to Trump?
