When I heard NBC News reporter Ron Allen ask President Obama a stunning question about the prosperous Donald Trump at the president’s press conference on Tuesday, “Do you now not think that Donald Trump will win the nomination?” I held my breath for a moment. Great question.
The short answer was “no,” but the president’s response was intriguing. He thinks that Trump:
‘…may up the ante in anti-Muslim sentiment, but others have said troubling things to the international community, not just Mr. Trump.’
Then, he went on to say that all the Republican candidates have that in common, plus anti-immigration and denying climate change. President Obama thinks that people believe in reason and science, and that they have common sense:
‘I continue to believe that Mr.Trump will not be president. And the reason is, I have a lot of faith in the American people. And I think they recognize that being president is a serious job.’
‘It’s not hosting a talk show, or a reality show, it’s not promotion or marketing. It’s hard, and a lot of people count on us getting it right. And it’s not a matter of pandering and saying whatever will get you on the news that day.’
Donald Trump didn’t take President Obama’s comment seriously. To the contrary, he called it a “great compliment” because Obama has done “such a lousy job as president.” A moderator read the president’s comments aloud for a packed Trump town hall meeting.
Trump gave one of his oh-give-me-a-break looks, and the crowd booed. Then the reality star said:
‘This man has done such a bad job and set us back so far. For him to say that is actually a great compliment.’
Then, Trump said that President Obama should feel fortunate that the real estate mogul didn’t challenge Mitt Romney for the 2012 Republican nomination:
‘You’re lucky I didn’t run last time. You’d be a one-term president.’
President Obama continued with his press conference:
‘Primaries are reported like entertainment, but reality has a way of intruding. These are the folks who have the nuclear codes with them, order 21-year-olds into the firefight, and make sure the banking system doesn’t collapse.’
Yeah, there’s that.
