At about 9:41 this morning police were called to the Walmart in Kaufman, Texas, about 30 minutes outside of Houston. According to the Kaufman Police Department, the gunman came into the store with the intention of murdering someone with whom they had personal strife.
The victim was an employee of the Walmart store, but it is still unknown what the exact motive was. At around noon, the police department posted on their Facebook page that the victim died at the scene, but the gunman was in critical condition at the hospital. This conflicted with earlier reports that both people died at the scene.
According to CBS:
“The 55-year-old male suspect walked into the store’s garden center and fired shots at a 59-year-old male employee. The suspect then turned the gun on himself. Authorities explained that the two men were friends, but neither of the men have been identified.”
Police Captain Ed Black had this to say:
“There has been some past history between the two. Both men are from Henderson County.”
Shortly after the media was informed, Walmart released this message to the public:
“We’re deeply saddened by the tragic situation that occurred in our store today. We’re assisting law enforcement however we can and our thoughts are with the families and our associates at this time.”
