In Great Britain, former West Mercia Police Officer Derren Jon Tomlinson confessed to charges of raping a little girl under the age of 13 and a dog.
Tomlinson worked as a Community Support Officer for about nine years before police discovered his heinous crimes.
During a separate investigation into police corruption by West Mercia’s police anti-corruption unit, Tomlinson was arrested for an unrelated offense. In the course of their investigation, the ACU seized Tomlinson’s phone and on it were images of the former officer raping a little girl and a dog.
When Judge Robin Onions addressed the rapist, he said Tomlinson had caused “immeasurable harm.”
The judge told him:
‘I am satisfied on the basis of the psychiatric report, on the basis of the pre-sentence report and on my own assessment of this case, that you are dangerous. I consider you to be a significant risk of serious harm.’
The judge noted that Tomlinson had a “trusted and important job in the community,” however, he believed the offenses hand “absolutely no link” to his position as a police officer.
Tomlinson was sentenced to only 11 years and four months on the charges of raping a child under 13 and four concurrent years for sexual assault on a child under 13. He was also sentenced to 12 concurrent months for bestiality.
West Mercia Police Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Steven Cullen said:
‘While none of these offenses were connected to his role, he has violated the trust that both the public and his colleagues placed in him in the most heinous of ways.
A proactive and thorough investigation was conducted by our officers as soon as information regarding these offenses was discovered and today Tomlinson has quite rightly been made to face the consequences of his despicable actions.
I hope that the sentence he is facing reassures the community that people who commit such crimes, regardless of the position they hold, will always be brought to justice.
Our thoughts are with the people who have been directly affected by his abhorrent behaviour.’
Chief Superintendent Charles Hill said:
‘These abhorrent acts have understandably caused a huge amount of shock and distress.
As soon as information regarding these offences came to light Derren Tomlinson was arrested and a comprehensive investigation was launched in order to bring him to justice.’
Here are some disturbing statistics about child rape in the United Kingdom via Ibtimes that further illustrate the seriousness and pervasiveness of the problem.
‘A quarter of a million Britons – more than one in every 200 adults – are paedophiles, according to figures released by Scotland Yard, the Telegraph reported in 2000.
In 2012/13, there were 18,915 sexual crimes against children under 16 recorded in England and Wales, according to the National Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC). Included in that figure were 4,171 offences of sexual assault on a female child under 13 and 1,267 offences of sexual assault on under-13 male children.
In the UK, one in 20 children (4.8%) have experienced contact sexual abuse and over 90% of children who experienced sexual abuse, were abused by someone they know, NSPCC said.
A paedophile ring linked to Britain’s worst abuser Robert Smith, arrested in 2005, is ‘still at large’, the Herald reported in 2013.’
