Bernie Sanders Takes The Mic, Schools Republicans on ‘New York Values’, Then Brilliantly Walks Off Stage

Bernie Sanders made a special appearance on Comedy Central’s The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore just so he could school Republicans on New York Values. Well, Sanders was the special guest last night, so he talked about a few other things, too. For instance, Sanders told Wilmore that winning Southern states in the Democratic primary does not count for much when it comes to the general election, when everybody knows those same states are all going blue. But really he was there to talk about New York values.

The Vermont senator introduced himself as Bernie ‘Brooklyn-Born’ Sanders and proceeded to deliver what amounts to part tirade and part stand-up routine. Sanders is hilarious and on-message throughout. He starts off by explaining his New York values:

‘I value a living wage for all Americans. I value a justice system that treats everyone fairly. I value a government that works for all of us, not just Wall Street and powerful special interests. Those are New York values.’

After that, Sanders turns his attention to Donald Trump:

‘Mr. Trump, you wouldn’t know New York values if they were written in 50-foot gold letters on the side of the Empire State Building. In New York we pride ourselves on diversity. We don’t divide people up based on where they were born.’

And he finishes off with a sound bite so good, no one should hold it against him if he repeats it verbatim during tonight’s debate:

‘We believe in the value of hard work, we believe in the value of equality, we believe in a society where the American dream works for all, not just the one percent. Those are New York values and the truth is those are American values and there is no difference.’

Sanders then literally drops his mic to Larry Wilmore’s great delight. See for yourself in the video below.

For the record, this New York values thing did not actually start with Ted Cruz, and it looks suspiciously like the Texas senator has been cribbing from Mike Huckabee’s failed presidential bid. Remember the Bubbas versus Bubbles? If not, check this out for a quick refresher and, as a bonus, watch Jon Stewart’s takedown of it. How could Cruz have possibly known any of this would backfire?
