Someone with a rifle opened fire just outside of a high school prom in Wisconsin, wounding at least two students who were exiting the venue.
A police officer returned fire on the attacker “stopping the threat,” according to authorities. The suspect was listed in critical condition. KAKE reports that the suspect has died from his injuries.
The attack happened late Saturday outside the Antigo High School prom, said Eric Roller, the chief of police in Antigo, a community of about 8,000 people roughly 150 miles north of Milwaukee.
Roller said in a news release that the students who were wounded were shot as they exited the building, though he didn’t say if investigators believe those students were specifically targeted.
“Officers were in the parking lot patrolling the activities and heard the shots and an officer immediately fired upon the shooter, stopping the threat,” Roller said.
It’s not clear at this time if the shooter had any connection to the students who were injured and/or the high school.
Roller said those students and a third injured person — who may be the attacker, but he didn’t specify — were transported to a local hospital. Investigators do not believe there is a further threat to the community. Students were kept on lockdown for hours.
“All the people within the prom were eventually escorted from the school and are safe,” the Antigo Police Department said. “We believe the scene is secure and do not see a further threat to the community at this time.”
The gender of the victims or the attacker was not revealed by police in a statement on Facebook.
