In a recent commencement at Jackson State University, Michelle Obama annihilated Mississippi’s anti-LGBT bill and called on students and faculty to step up and do what’s right. Obama made it clear that she does not agree with the bill — which allows LGBT discrimination based off of religion — Mississippi’s approach, or how blindly the masses are following such ridiculous laws.
During Michelle’s speech she urged everyone to vote and advocated human rights by saying,
‘Congress will still be gridlocked. Statehouses will continue to roll back voting rights and write discrimination into the law. We see it right here in Mississippi — just two weeks ago -– how swiftly progress can hurtle backward, how easy it is to single out a small group and marginalize them because of who they are or who they love.
So we’ve got to stand side by side with all our neighbors –- straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender; Muslim, Jew, Christian, Hindu immigrant, Native American — because the march for civil rights isn’t just about African-Americans, it’s about all Americans, It’s about making things more just, more equal, more free for all our kids and grandkids. That’s the story you all have the opportunity to write. That’s what this historic university has prepared you to do.’
The Protecting Freedom of Conscience from Government Discrimination Act gives citizens the right to impede on others’ rights because they feel their actions do not follow their religion. America is about freedom of religion, yet this bill is pushing religions onto people and forcing them to follow religious guidelines or be discriminated against. The whole bill goes against the American constitution, yet it is still in effect in Mississippi while other states are pushing for it.
This complete injustice has not only affected Americans but those traveling to America from overseas. According to The Huffington Post,
‘Earlier this week, the U.K. issued a travel warning to LGBT travelers who “may be affected by legislation passed recently in the states of North Carolina and Mississippi.”’
‘President Barack Obama also addressed the issue in a press conference with British Prime Minister David Cameron over the weekend. Obama said that while the people of North Carolina and Mississippi “are wonderful” and that the British people should feel welcome to visit those states, “the laws that have been passed there are wrong and should be overturned.”’
First lady, Michelle Obama, took a stand for human rights and destroyed Mississippi lawmakers and the atrocities they call bills. Mississippi’s anti-LGBT bill is taking basic human rights away and forcing religion onto others. Only time will tell how long this asinine bill will last.
