Ted Cruz received a mass of approval from an audience in La Porte, Indiana after scolding a young protester who shouted “you suck” at the Republican presidential runner-up while he was delivering one of his typical, creepily soft-spoken speeches. The young man was near the front of the stage when Cruz pointed him out and addressed him specifically saying:
“You know one of the things that hopefully someone has told you, is that children should actually speak with respect.”
The crowd roared as Cruz took the opportunity to use the incident as a jab against the guy massacring him in the polls, Donald Trump, by saying:
“Imagine what a different world it would be if someone told Donald Trump that years ago.”
Cruz then goes on to explain what happens when children misspeak in his home. Cruz continued:
“You know, in my household, when a child behaves that way, they get a spanking.”
Cruz doesn’t seem to bother reading the new studies that show that corporal punishment on any human is detrimental to their psychological health — that, or he thinks it’s a liberal conspiracy like global warming. Associate professor of human development and family sciences at the University of Texas at Austin, Elizabeth T. Gershoff said this about spanking as a form of discipline:
“Spanking makes children’s behavior worse. It has the opposite effect than what parents want: It doesn’t make children better-behaved, and it doesn’t teach children right from wrong. It’s not related to immediate compliance, and it doesn’t make children behave better in the future.”
After analyzing 50 years of research and data on the subject, Gershoff and a partner found that spanking is abuse, any way you cut it:
“The evidence against spanking is one of the most consistent findings in the field of psychology.”
In early 2016 Cruz was reported by Huffington Post to have spoken publicly while in Iowa about hitting his 5-year old daughter Catherine if she says something she “knows to be false.” He also made a remark about Hillary needing to be spanked by voters for her actions after Benghazi.
The question is, why does Ted Cruz talk about spanking so much?
