After Donald Trump won the Indiana primary, Ted Cruz dropped a bombshell on his supporters and the rest of America, he will be suspending his campaign. This is very unsettling news to Cruz supporters who, while they are registered republicans, refuse to support the Republican front-runner and will be voting Democrat this fall if Trump gains the nomination.
‘From the beginning, I’ve said I would continue on as long as there was a viable path to victory. Tonight, I’m sorry to say it appears that path has been foreclosed[sic]. Together we left it all on the field in Indiana, we gave it everything we got. So with a heavy a heart, but with boundless optimism, for the long-term future of our nation, we are suspending our campaign.’
This shocking information threw Cruz supporters into emotional turmoil. Voters that were hoping to be able to vote for Cruz in the fall are now questioning if they will even vote Republican, as the likely republican nominee is Donald Trump.
According to a poll by Morning Consult, only 62% of Cruz’s supporters agreed they will vote for Donald Trump, while 13% said they will vote for Hillary Clinton, and 25% are left unsure. Throughout the campaign Cruz has referred to Trump as:
‘…a pathological liar, he doesn’t know the difference between truth and lies’ and ‘Donald is a bully … bullies don’t come from strength they come from weakness.’
Cruz’s supporters have been given an awful taste of Trump and it has been ingrained in their minds that Trump is against their beliefs and will not make a good president.
While Cruz has so flawlessly been making a fool out of Donald Trump to his supporters, the Republican party is surprised at these numbers. With 13% of Cruz supporters voting for Clinton, this can be a huge game changer in the general election and the GOP is not ready for it. Not only are voters claiming they would rather vote for Clinton than Trump, but many well known and respected Republicans have already changed their voting registration upon Cruz dropping out of the race.
The Morning Consult also polled Cruz supporters on Trump’s favorability. Much to Trumps surprise, many of Cruz’s supporters find Trump unfavorable. Whether it be his constant lies or his egotistical personality, Trump leaves many Americans full of hate and disgust.
Of Cruz’s supporters only 1% has no opinion on Trump or has never heard of him, while 69% find him unfavorable and a measly 29% view the Republican front-runner as favorable. The Democratic party is gaining voters by the minute, not because Republican voters necessarily love Hillary Clinton, but because in their eyes she is the lesser of two evils and will keep Trump out of the white house.
After Cruz’s loss in Tuesdays Indiana primary, he dropped out of the presidential race and many of his supporters have dropped their party. These shocking numbers come after Cruz has so blatantly talked down about Donald Trump and has instilled a sense of disgust when the Republican front-runner is mentioned.
