The 69th annual Cannes Film Festival began Wednesday in France and is currently in full swing until the 22nd of this month. Many notable actors and actresses have graced the Cannes red carpet, one being the infamous George Clooney.
George Clooney is well known for his stellar acting and made an appearance at the film festival to promote the release of the new film Money Monster, according to News24. The film is a thriller directed by Oscar-winning actress Jodie Foster, in which Clooney plays a Wall Street television journalist who gets called out by a man who lost everything on the stock market.
Clooney says the film speaks to the current political climate in the United States. The film documents how Wall Street tycoons, reality television and corporate-owned news corporations have wreaked havoc on America’s sense of authentic journalistic integrity. Clooney also blames these forces for the rise of The Donald, telling reporters at the Cannes Film Festival:
‘Trump is a result of all the news programs that don’t follow up and ask the questions. 24-hour news doesn’t mean you get more news, you just get the same news more. They can put up their ratings with an empty podium saying Donald Trump is about to speak rather than take 30 seconds and talk about refugees, the biggest crisis in the world.’
Clooney went on to pose this question, which he subsequently answered:
‘Would all of the corporations fall on their knees if we did actually inform people? We have lost the ability to tell the truth and get to the facts,’ he claimed.
Clooney has previously voiced his distaste for the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, saying former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, is “the only grown-up in the room.” Clooney is a Clinton supporter and has held several fundraisers for the Democratic presidential front-runner in hopes of her securing the Democratic nomination and taking on Trump in the general election.
Clooney had this to say about Trump’s blatantly racist rhetoric:
‘If you listen to the loudest voices out there today, you’d think we’re a country that hates Mexicans, hates Muslims, and thinks that committing war crimes is the best way to make America great again. The truth is, that the only thing that would prevent America from being great would be to empower these voices.’
Trump has long tapped into the fear of uneducated, insecure, terrified, racist white people who seem to support him and show little tolerance for anyone who isn’t a straight, white, male.
Clooney went on to tell reporters at the Cannes Film Festival,
‘There is not going to be a President Donald Trump. That is not going to happen because fear is not going to drive our country.
‘We are not going to be scared of Muslims or immigrants or women. We are not actually afraid of anything.’
Clearly George Clooney is no fan of Trump, and for good reason. Most reasonably minded folks aren’t. Hopefully Clooney is right – that there won’t be a President Donald Trump. America doesn’t need a president who wants to hold the country back – we need one who will push it forward.
