Apparently all too happy to take advantage of a bad situation, Republican front-runner Donald Trump has blamed his likely challenger Hillary Clinton for the crash of EgyptAir flight MS804.
Shortly after the crash, which he blamed on Islamic terrorism, Trump sent out the following tweet:
‘Looks like yet another terrorist attack. Airplane departed from Paris. When will we get tough, smart and vigilant? Great hate and sickness!’
Egypt has admitted that terrorism is a possibility, but so far investigators have not found conclusive evidence either way. Trump’s claims of terrorism make sense considering that a large part of his campaign has been built around his promise to keep America safe from groups such as ISIS, but for a potential President of the United States to automatically rule out other possibilities is more than a little unnerving.
For someone who likes to use his lack of political experience as a selling point for his campaign, Trump has certainly mastered the age-old skill of blaming your opponents for every potential disaster, as this recent statement shows:
‘Look at the carnage all over the world including the World Trade Center, San Bernardino, Paris, the USS Cole, Brussels and an unlimited number of other places. She and our totally ignorant President won’t even use the term Radical Islamic Terrorism. And by the way, ask Hillary who blew up the plane last night – another terrible, but preventable tragedy. She has bad judgement and is unfit to serve as President at this delicate and difficult time in our country’s history.’
Arguing that Hillary and President Barrack Obama are responsible for every act of terrorism on their watch is a stretch, but at least it’s one where an argument could be made, even if that argument is a poor one. But to attempt to link Clinton to 9/11, which Trump’s statement seems be doing, is simply absurd.
The facts are that Clinton was a junior Senator of New York when 9/11 occurred and was hardly responsible for national security at a level capable of preventing the attacks. As Trump himself pointed out, it was his party that controlled the White House when 9/11 occurred, so if he wants to hold any party responsible for not preventing that tragedy he should look to the Republicans.
Continuing with his theme of calling his opponents weak, Trump sent out another tweet. This one claimed that Hillary “has no chance” of stopping terrorism:
‘Look where the world is today, a total mess, and ISIS is still running around wild. I can fix it fast, Hillary has no chance!’
Trump’s current proposals for fixing it fast include a ban on all Muslims entering the United States and a reinstatement of torture and killing the families of terrorists. Not only are these policies ethically wrong and, in cases of the latter two, illegal, but they are also largely ineffective. Even the CIA has admitted that torture is not an effective way of gathering intelligence since people will eventually say anything, true or not, to make the pain stop.
