Social media can be both a blessing and a curse, and if you’re an avid Facebook or Twitter user, you probably already know that. But as both platforms continue to become increasingly popular, we’re seeing more and more people tweeting and posting as a way of having their voices heard.
Given that we’re in the midst of one of the most polarized, heated elections we’ve seen in American history, it’s no wonder more people are speaking out and sharing their political views on social media.
Recently, however, one Twitter user found out that there’s definitely a downside to using social media platforms to voice one’s opinions.
Olivia Wilde is a Hollywood A-list actress as well as an outspoken activist who often takes to Twitter to share her political views as well as her opinions on various social issues.
Wilde took to Twitter recently in an effort to stop Donald Trump from becoming the next President of the United States, as well as ensuring more women make it into elected office:
The link in Wilde’s tweet is to a video posted to Facebook by Emily’s List, a feminist, grassroots political organization focused on electing pro-choice Democratic women to public office. The campaign currently supports Hillary Clinton for president, but has supported and endorsed many female politicians over the past 30 years.
The video covered a recent meeting in New York City where the Emily’s List Creative Council got together to discuss sexism and the role of feminism in the 2016 election.

Wilde also made it clear she doesn’t shy away from speaking out about important issues facing the country. On Monday, in light of the Freddie Gray verdict, Wilde sent out a tweet expressing the need to hold police accountable for violent crimes if we ever hope to achieve peace in American society:
But just hours after she tweeted about stopping Trump and working toward ending police brutality, Wilde was apparently bombarded with racist tweets and flack from Trump supporters:
It’s not always easy to speak out against injustice, but in order to fight it, it’s imperative that we do. Kudos to Olivia Wilde for standing up for those who may not have a voice or a platform to do so, and for fighting for what she believes in. We need more celebrities like her.
