Since the news first broke about the tragic mass shooting at an Orlando, Florida gay nightclub politicians of both parties have issued sympathetic statements. Republican leaders have offered “thoughts and prayers,” but little in the way of real solutions to the epidemic of gun violence in this country. That being said, at least they did have the decency to respond to the tragedy instead of ignoring it as the NRA has done.
The NRA hasn’t issued any statements in response to the Orlando shooting despite an outcry on social media criticizing them for the silence and complicity in allowing men such as Omar Mateen to obtain fire arms. That’s not to say the NRA has been completely silent since the shooting. Sunday morning, the NRA posted a tweet that read “Need a gift for #FathersDay? How about a gift from the #NRA store?!”

Perhaps the NRA should take some time off from attempting to make money and offer their sympathies to the fathers who will never see their sons again. It’s probably too much to ask that they actually address their own role in this and other tragedies, but their instinctive response to this tragedy just highlights how out of touch the organization is.
Doubtless some would argue that the NRA holds no responsibility for this and many other mass shootings that occur in the United States. It’s true that Mateen bears full responsibility for his horrific actions, but the facts remain that countries with stricter gun laws do not have these kinds of mass shootings. There have been 133 mass shootings in this country since January 1st, 2016.
In the wake of this tragedy numerous lawmakers have called for stricter gun control laws. Senator Dick Durbin, the second highest ranking Democrat in the Senate, stated that Congress must act now.
‘WE HAVE THE POWER TO ACT, AND WE MUST. THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT WE ALLOW DANGEROUS PEOPLE TO BUY GUNS IN AMERICA AND THAT HAS GOT TO CHANGE. IN THE COMING DAYS, CONGRESS MUST TAKE A STAND AGAINST HATE, TERRORISM, AND THIS HORRIFIC GUN VIOLENCE’
The truly sad thing is the fact that the NRA’s actual response to this tragedy will be to do nothing. They, and their allies in the Republican Party, will hide behind the 2nd amendment instead of addressing the very real problems this country faces.
