JUST IN: Top Senators DEMAND Congress Pass Gun Control After The Orlando Shooting (QUOTES)

Democratic Senator Dick Durbin, of Illinois, has demanded that Congress pass new gun control laws in the wake of the shooting at an Orlando gay nightclub. The shooting, which took place early Sunday morning, is the worst in U.S. history with 50 dead and 53 others sent to the hospital. Durbin is the second highest ranking Democrat in the Senate and has stated that if Congress does not act, then it will be “complicit in the next killing.”

‘We have the power to act, and we must. The bottom line is that we allow dangerous people to buy guns in America and that has got to change. In the coming days, Congress must take a stand against hate, terrorism, and this horrific gun violence.’

Durbin isn’t the only politician to call for tougher gun laws. In a special address, President Obama stated that the United States is facing a choice as to what kind of country it wants to be and that “to actively do nothing is a decision as well.”

‘this massacre is therefore a further reminder of how easy it is for someone to get their hands on a weapon that lets them shoot people in a school or a house of worship or a movie theater or a nightclub. We have to decide if that’s the kind of country we want to be. To actively do nothing is a decision as well.’

Bernie Sanders spoke about the attack during an interview with Meet The Press where he discussed his views on gun control and a ban on automatic weapons.

‘It’s horrific. It’s unthinkable, and just hopes go out to those who were shot that they can recover, and I’ve got to tell you for twenty-five years now, I’ve believed that we should not be selling automatic weapons which are designed to kill people, and we’ve got to do everything we can on top of that to make sure that guns do not fall into the hands of people who should not have them. Criminals and people who are mentally ill, so that struggle continues.’

The shooter, Omar Mateen, is suspected of having ties to the terrorist group ISIS, though nothing concrete has emerged. It has been revealed that the weapons used in the attack were purchased legally and that Mateen had been investigated by the FBI for ties to terrorist organizations.
