In the wake of the tragic shooting at Pulse, an Orlando nightclub, the debate over gun control has take new prominence in the national debate. Democratic lawmakers have called for tighter restrictions on gun control with some calling for an out-right ban on the sale of assault weapons. Most Conservative lawmakers and pundits are arguing against such a ban, but not all of them. Gretchen Carlson took a firm, and likely controversial stance, when she called for a ban on assault weapons.

In the My Take segment of her show, Carlson spoke out against the ease of obtaining assault rifles and the fact that it’s easier to purchase an AR rifle than a handgun.

There’s no doubt Omar Mateen was able to kill so many people because he was firing an AR-15. A military-style assault weapon, a weapon easier to buy in the state of Florida than buying a handgun. Florida sets a three day waiting period for purchasing handguns, but the state mandates no waiting period for any gun that requires two hands to hold.’

She went onto point out that President Obama and Democratic leaders have asked Congress to reinstate the assault rifle ban which expired in 2004, but Republicans in Congress voted against the bill. She also pointed out a recent Quinnipac poll that showed 58% of Americans support reinstating the ban. She also made it clear that she does support the right to carry weapons and believes some shootings would have been less dangerous if more people were armed.

‘Do we need AR-15s to hunt and kill deer? Do we need them to protect our families?  I’m in favor of people being able to carry. I think some of these mass shootings would have been less deadly if that were the case. But I’m also with the majority today, taking a stand,’ Carlson said of the assault weapons ban. ‘Can’t we hold true the sanctity of the Second Amendment while still having common sense?’

Carlson asked her viewers if they were in favor of the restoring the assault weapons ban and 89% of her viewers said they were not.
