John Oliver opened his “Last Week Tonight” program on HBO Sunday by providing his viewers with a moving introduction in the wake of the Orlando Massacre hate crime against 49 mostly Latino patrons of Pulse, a local gay club. The event was the deadliest mass shooting in American history.
The shooter aligned himself with the Islamic State to 911 dispatchers after he called them in the middle of the senseless slaughter he took part in. Recent evidence, however, seems to indicate that the shooter was little more than a lone wolf domestic terrorist exploiting our nation’s lax gun laws to accomplish his solitary “mission,” such as it was, with frightening ease.
Oliver addressed the events while information was unfolding Sunday, before the identities of the victims and the shooter became known. He did, however, make it clear that he did not want his viewers at that moment to focus on the actions of a “dipsh*t terrorist,” as he put it, but on the aspects of the story that signify the best aspects of American culture and society.
Oliver noted that the event occurred at “a Latin night at a gay club in the Theme Park capital of the world.” Oliver then stated, “I will happily embrace a Latin night at a gay club at the theme park capital of the world as the ultimate symbol of what is truly wonderful about America.”
Oliver then went on to show video footage of an incredibly long line wrapped around a blood bank in Orlando, Florida, with hundreds of Orlando citizens eagerly and immediately responding to the tragedy by donating much needed blood to the victims at Orlando Regional Medical Center. Oliver said of the footage, “It kind of reminds you that that terrorist dipsh*t is vastly outnumbered.”
Despite Oliver’s insistence on focusing on the more redeeming elements of those who responded to the event, the monologue was undeniably solemn, with Oliver appearing to hold back tears before telling viewers to stay tuned for his “stupid show.” Oliver continued on with his regularly scheduled program, which is ironically one of the most thoughtful and intelligent pieces of political satire on television at the moment.
