Illinois Republican Senator Mark Kirk recently made news when he rescinded his endorsement of Donald Trump. Now, adding insult to injury, Kevin Robillard of POLITICO reports, Kirk has released an ad that includes a not-so-subtle attack on the Republican nominee.
Mark Kirk is the first GOP incumbent to air an ad attacking Trump: https://t.co/tMqgZZUEdI The real Q: Will he be the last?

The ad, which is titled “Even More,” promotes Kirk as an independent-minded, bipartisan legislator. It boasts Kirk supporting a senate hearing on Merrick Garland, Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, as well as the fact that Kirk supports a woman’s right to choose. What appears to be Kirk’s greatest accomplishment, though, at least according to this ad, is the fact that he “bucked his party to say that Donald Trump is not fit to be commander-in-chief.”
According to the Chicago Tribune, Kirk put down quite a bit of money for this thirty-second ad. It is part of a large ad buy of “about $230,000 in broadcast time for the weeklong buy and another $35,520 in cable TV time in Chicago.”
Kirk certainly drew attention when he rescinded his endorsement of Trump at the same time that people like Paul Ryan were grudgingly giving him their support. For Kirk, it seems that the final straw was Trump’s blatantly racist comments about Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who is presiding over the lawsuit against Trump University.
In a statement, Kirk called Trump’s comments about Curiel “un-American,” and said that, while he opposes Hillary Clinton, “Donald Trump’s latest statements, in context with past attacks on Hispanics, women, and the disabled like [him], make it certain that [he] cannot and will not support [his] party’s nominee for president regardless of the political impact on [his] candidacy or the Republican party.”
He concluded his speech by criticizing Trump’s temperament and judgment:
‘IT IS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL THAT WE ARE GUIDED BY A COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF WITH A RESPONSIBLE AND PROPER TEMPERAMENT, DISCRETION AND JUDGMENT. OUR PRESIDENT MUST BE FIT TO COMMAND THE MOST POWERFUL MILITARY THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN, INCLUDING AN ARSENAL OF THOUSANDS OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS. AFTER MUCH CONSIDERATION, I HAVE CONCLUDED THAT DONALD TRUMP HAS NOT DEMONSTRATED THE TEMPERAMENT NECESSARY TO ASSUME THE GREATEST OFFICE IN THE WORLD.’
Kirk is currently running for reelection against Democratic Representative Tammy Duckworth, and he certainly seems to be cashing in on his disavowal of Trump. With Trump’s approval ratings plummeting, Kirk being one of the first to take back his endorsement may end up working in his favor.
