Last night, a video and private, risqué photographs of Stacey Plaskett, congresswoman and Democratic representative from the Virgin Islands, were posted online and shared across many different social media platforms.
The photos in question show Plaskett’s husband, Jonathan Buckney-Small, naked and wearing nothing but makeup. Plaskett’s computer was hacked into and the video and pictures were illegally dispersed across the internet.
Plaskett describes the occurrence as follows:
‘Private photographs shared between my husband and me, as well as a private playful video of our family, including one of our children, were illegally obtained and disseminated via the internet.’
Pointing the blame at enemies she has gained while in congress, Plaskett released a statement clarifying that this incident will not be brushed under the rug. This act is not just an attack on Plaskett, but it also intrudes into the private lives of her family members. She did not take the offense lightly and continued:
‘The theft and distribution of these personal images via the internet marks a new low in Virgin Islands politics. I am shocked and deeply saddened that someone would stoop to such a level as to invade my marriage and the love of my family in an attempt to besmirch me politically.’
While the sharing of these files may have been an attempt to make Plaskett look bad, she feels the attack is not just on herself but on all women across the nation.
‘This incident shows that there are some people who will go to any length to degrade a woman who refuses to play their games.’
Plaskett takes a stand for herself and those who voted her into her position; she is not afraid to anger others while doing what she feels is right. She has pointed out the unfortunate fact that, while the world is progressing, women are still not treated as men’s equals.
Not only were Plaskett’s own files shared, but her family members’ personal lives are now blasted across the media.
Plaskett will not stand for her family being treated like this:
‘As a mother I am outraged that one of my children was exploited in such a way. The theft and dissemination of these images via the internet is a shockingly disgusting invasion of my family’s and my privacy – not to mention criminal acts in violation of both territorial and federal law.’
Politico reports that Plaskett’s Chief of Staff, Jerome Murray, is backing her in her efforts to locate the person who shared the photos and video.
‘Our office is currently working with the Capitol Police and the FBI and I can confirm that an active investigation is underway to find out who committed this crime and anyone else who may have been involved.’
While the motive behind sharing these files has not been confirmed, Plaskett is going after whoever shared this personal part of her life. The sexualization of Plaskett and her family, as well as the intrusiveness of sharing her personal files, is not going unnoticed by law enforcement and the FBI, either.
