Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg will announce his endorsement of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday, reports ABC News.
Howard Wolfsen, a senior advisor to Michael Bloomberg, told ABC News:
‘As the nation’s leading independent and a pragmatic business leader Mike (Bloomberg) has supported candidates from both sides of the aisle. This week in Philadelphia he will make a strong case that the clear choice in this election is Hillary Clinton.’
The move by Bloomberg seems to be much more related to his opposition to Donald Trump than his alignment with the Democratic party or agenda, according to CNN.
‘The move by Bloomberg — who left the Democratic Party in 2000, was elected mayor of New York City as a Republican and is now an independent — reflects his desire to see Republican nominee Donald Trump defeated.’
Bloomberg has spoken out publicly several times throughout the presidential race about his absolute opposition to the views Donald Trump has expressed throughout his campaign, saying that Trump “has run the most divisive and demagogic presidential campaign I can remember, preying on people’s prejudices and fears,” and that he “appeals to our worst impulses.”
Bloomberg even floated the idea of running for president as an independent candidate in 2016, but decided against it for fear that none of the candidates would win a majority of votes, leaving the decision up to Congress instead of the people.
‘As the race stands now, with Republicans in charge of both Houses, there is a good chance that my candidacy could lead to the election of Donald Trump or Senator Ted Cruz. That is not a risk I can take in good conscience.’
Clinton and Bloomberg are not reported to be “incredibly close,” but Bloomberg, like many Independent voters during this election cycle, has an extreme aversion to policies proposed by Trump, such as banning Muslims from traveling to the US.
The former mayor will speak on Wednesday along with President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.
