It’s been a long time since anyone other than racist white people thought Bill O’Reilly was a swell, smart guy, but his most recent tirade went way beyond the pale.
After First Lady Michelle Obama gave one of the most inspirational and moving speeches ever heard at a DNC or anywhere else, Bill O’Reilly took it upon himself to go on a long, white tirade that justified and minimized slavery. By doing so, he did little more than look pompous and prove that the First Lady was correct.
‘Records show about 400 payments made to slave masters between 1795 and 1801. In addition, free blacks, whites, and immigrants also worked on the massive building.’
So Michelle Obama was correct. There were slaves who built the White House. She never said that ONLY slaves built the White House, just that slavery was still legal and the federal government at the time felt perfectly okay with forcing human beings into working on a government building simply because they had a particular skin color.
‘Slaves that worked there were well-fed and had decent lodgings provided by the government.’
That’s just fantastic, Bill. Do you imagine people of color today feel grateful that, at one time, slave owners who felt perfectly comfortable owning human bodies in the same way they owned cattle recognized that they weren’t going to profit from the hard, forced labor of those human beings if they starved or died from exposure? How completely gracious and wonderful of them.
O’Reilly, as he usually does, missed the point while white-washing history. The FLOTUS’s point in saying that she “wakes up every day in a house built by slaves” had a specific meaning, which was spelled out when she followed up her statement by saying, “And I watch my daughters, two beautiful, intelligent, black young women playing with their dogs on the White House lawn.”
There was a point in history, Mr. O’Reilly, when the only way a person of color could get anywhere near the White House was by either performing manual labor for a paycheck or being FORCED to do so without pay because of the color of their skin. Today, a family of color not only lives in the White House, but runs the country — a country that once felt it should be perfectly legal to own them like animals — from that same White House.
That is the significance in what she said.
