It was fairly certain that some people were going to take issue with Bill Clinton’s DNC speech. One person America was probably not expecting to criticize the speech, though, was liberal MSNBC host Rachel Maddow.
On Tuesday, during MSNBC’s coverage of the Democratic National Convention, Maddow called the top part of Clinton’s speech “shocking and rude.”
‘I think the beginning of the speech was a controversial way to start, honestly, talking about the girl, a girl, leading with this long story about him being attracted to an unnamed girl and thinking about whether he was starting something he couldn’t finish, building her whole political story, for the whole first half of the speech around her marriage to him. I think, unless there were worries that this is going to be too feminist a convention, that was not a feminist way to start. But the end of the speech was really good. I’ve got to say, the top of the speech I found shocking and rude.’
After Maddow shared her opinions about Clinton’s speech, many people took to Twitter to disagree with her.

Rachel Maddow didn't like the first part of Bill's speech. I'm a feminist and I loved it.

Others agreed with Maddow, but still found the speech to be far superior to anything that was delivered at the Republican National Convention.
I have to agree with Rachel Maddow on the beginning of Bill Clinton's speech. I wish he had not reminisced so… https://t.co/XYlVdPbloT

Reactions on Twitter to Clinton’s speech varied greatly. Some found the opening of Bill’s speech to be romantic and sweet.

Others couldn’t help but point out Bill’s past infidelities.
He's dwelling so much on their relationship that he may have to allude at least to troubles in it that he caused, and her forgiveness.

And others were a bit concerned about the speech beginning with a year by year breakdown.
Bill Clinton is looking old. And I mean compared to what he looked like at the beginning of this speech. #DemsInPhilly

Despite disagreement over the beginning of Bill Clinton’s speech, many were impressed with his, in many ways successful, attempt at humanizing Hillary. By spending more time in his speech talking about Hillary as a mother and emphasizing all the work she has done for women and children, Bill reminded all those watching his speech that there is more to Hillary than what her opponents, both conservative and liberal, would have the world believe.

"One is real. One is made up." I could literally imagine Omar Little saying that. CLINTON COMIN'. #DemsInPhilly
