The tall basketball hero Kareem Abdul-Jabbar strode onto the stage at the Democratic National Convention, pulled a fast one, then pounded Donald Trump with his first breath:
‘I’m Michael Jordan and I’m with Hillary. I say that because I know Donald Trump couldn’t tell the difference.’
Abdul-Jabbar, the all-time leading points scorer, scored a huge hit on the last night of the Democratic National Convention. He reached into our hearts with the story of Captain Humayun Saqib Muazzam Khan, who, according to Vox, was a U.S. Muslim soldier killed in combat when he fought in Iraq. The government awarded him the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart posthumously.
Abdul-Jabbar wove the story of how Khan’s family left the United Arab Emirates and came to this country:
‘The first place they visited upon arriving in America was the Jefferson memorial. The words engraved there read, “I have sworn upon the altar of god eternal, hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.”’
Then Abdul-Jabbar turned that strong voice of his on Trump:
‘Donald Trump’s idea to register Muslims and prevent them from entering our country is the very tyranny Jefferson abhorred.’
Abdul-Jabbar then turned to introduce Khan’s parents. The soldier’s father, Khizr Kahn, spoke directly to Trump, anger in his eyes as he reproached him for his divisive language against Muslims:
‘Have you ever been to Arlington cemetery? Go look at the graves of brave patriots, who died defending United States of America. You will see all faiths, genders, and ethnicities.’
‘You have sacrificed nothing and no one. We cannot solve — we cannot solve our problems by building walls, sewing division. We are stronger together.’
Trump has dripped his poisonous racism throughout the country as he’s marketed himself, appealing to citizens’ greatest fears. Sure, Trump calls himself the “law and order” candidate, but the John Wayne of politics is only acting.
The billionaire calls himself a builder of walls to keep Mexican immigrants out of the country. But he is really a builder of hatred, calling the people rapists and murderers.
Now, Trump wants all Muslims, whom he blames for all terrorism, banned from our shores.
