On “Morning Joe” today, Joe Scarborough described a foreign policy briefing given to Donald Trump by foreign policy experts. Scarborough was speaking to the former director of the CIA, Captain Michael V. Hayden. Hayden has also served as Director of the National Security Agency and First Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence before his time in the CIA. When it comes to foreign policy and national safety, Hayden is the expert.
Scarborough asked Hayden what it is that concerns him most about the possibility of a Donald Trump presidency. Hayden explained that it is Trump’s erratic and ever-shifting views that are concerning. Unpredictability is a dangerous thing in the leader of a national super power, according to Hayden.
This is a view Hayden has expressed before. Hayden explained in an interview in March that Trump’s statements regarding Muslims being banned from traveling to the US and being registered by the government have already made us unsafe.
‘You don’t have to be president […] for that kind of statement from someone so prominent in the American political system to have already made Americans less safe.’
Hayden was then asked who he knows in the foreign policy and national security fields who is currently advising Donald Trump during his presidential campaign. Hayden answered, “No one.”
No foreign policy or national security expert is currently advising Donald Trump, the GOP nominee who very possibly could become the president of our country in just over 90 days. No one.
Scarborough then dropped a bomb, no pun intended, on the conversation. He agreed that Trump has no foreign policy or national security experts advising him, and then he explained why. While protecting the innocent by keeping the foreign policy expert anonymous, Scarborough explained what happened during a meeting between Trump and an expert who tried to advise him.
‘I’ll be very careful here. Several months ago, a foreign policy expert on an international level went to advise Donald Trump and three times he asked about the use of nuclear weapons. Three times he asked, at one point, “If we have them, why can’t we use them?” That’s one of the reasons why he has…he just doesn’t have foreign policy experts around him.’
The entire panel, including General Hayden, was stunned into silence.
