NBC reporter Katy Tur has revealed a deeply disturbing and previously unknown fact about her time covering Donald Trump’s campaign for president.
In December of 2015, Tur was covering a Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, Trump rally. At this point, Trump was already long dominating press coverage, having effectively stolen the spotlight of the entire Republican presidential primary, one with a record number of candidates.
From this position, while speaking at this South Carolina rally, Trump took verbal aim at Tur.
‘She’s back there. Little Katy. She’s back there. What a lie it was. What a lie. Katy Tur. What a lie it was. Third. Rate. Reporter. Remember that.’
Trump was referring to Tur’s coverage of a rally held a few days earlier in Raleigh, North Carolina. At that rally, “wave after wave” of protesters interrupted Trump’s address.
Following the protesters insistence, Trump left the stage “abruptly,” as Tur reported at the time.
Trump, however, was not impressed with Tur’s coverage, contending that the usage of the word “abruptly” was out of line.
The problem is that some simple verbal tension with Tur isn’t where Trump left his dispute.
At the South Carolina rally where Trump took his dispute with Tur up publicly, saying what is noted above, the presidential candidate turned his crowd into a frenzied mob- directing their anger at Tur.
You can watch the moment Trump turned the crowd against Tur below.
That much was known up until now. However, Tur has revealed that the situation was so bad that the Secret Service escorted her to her car after the rally was concluded.
The Secret Service- that force tasked with protecting some of the nation’s most targeted persons such as those with some connection to the presidential office, be they candidates or former presidents.
Trump turned the rally so violent that the Secret Service had to be used to protect Tur.
As Tur wrote in an essay discussing the incident for Marie Claire, “The wave of insults, harassment, and threats, via various social-media feeds, hasn’t stopped since. Many of the attacks are unprintable.”
She shared the text of one such threat, from Twitter user GuyScott33. This threat came two weeks after Trump turned the North Carolina crowd against Tur. Two weeks- thus, the hate was planted deep.
‘MAYBE A FEW JOURNALISTS DO NEED TO BE WHACKED. MAYBE THEN THEY’D STOP BEI[N]G BIASED HACKS. KILL EM ALL STARTING W/ KATY TUR.’
This hate is not going to stop. Trump is still targeting Tur and journalists from outlet after outlet across the United States.
The candidate has pledged to crack down on “libel” in American press should he become president. Trump has proclaimed his seething hatred of the press and their insistence on finding the truth loud and clear throughout this election season.
One of his most well known and deeply disturbing controversies in which Trump involved himself was with another reporter, Megyn Kelly of Fox News. While criticizing the questions she gave to the candidate during a debate, he made the sickeningly sexist remark that Kelly had “blood coming out of her wherever.”
Tur wrote in her Marie Claire of her journalism team:
‘Fellow NBC reporters Andrea Mitchell, Kasie Hunt, Hallie Jackson, Kristen Welker, and I are the first women-led politics team in the history of network news.’
She has been covering the Trump campaign since day one.
