This week, world famous actor Robert De Niro blasted Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump at a European film festival, receiving rounds of thunderous applause in the process.
De Niro was in Sarajevo, accepting an award for his late 1970’s film, Taxi Driver. Throughout the course of his remarks, the actor said that he felt that the businessman turned presidential candidate bore a striking similarity to the deranged protagonist of De Niro’s film.
De Niro himself starred in the film, as the taxi driver, named Travis Bickle. Bickle is a mentally unstable veteran who develops irrational hatred for some of those he lives among. This hatred propels him to try his hand at winning the heart of a woman who, ironically enough, works on the presidential campaign of fictional candidate Senator Charles Palantine.
None of Bickel’s endeavors end up getting him anywhere. The end of the film finds him where it began, with Bickle driving a cab through New York City.
The actor discussed all of these attributes of his character while at the festival, comparing Bickle to Trump, and saying that he believes Trump to be unfit for the presidency.
All of De Niro’s comments on Trump were met with thundering applause.
The actor began, saying:
‘One of the things to me was just the irony of at the end, he’s back driving a cab, which is kind of relevant in some weird way today too.’
De Niro suggests that Bickle’s fall is like Trump, in that both men are on crash courses to nowhere. Indeed, as of mid- August Trump is looking at a close to zero chance of winning the presidency.
De Niro went on. He said:
‘I don’t know, it’s crazy that people like Donald Trump…he shouldn’t even be where he is, so God help us.’
The crowd then burst into applause.
De Niro, however, was also optimistic, seeming to think that America would successfully stop Trump from causing significant damage.
‘But I think now they are really starting to push back, the media … finally they are starting to say: Come on Donald, this is ridiculous, this is nuts, this is insane. What he’s been saying is really totally crazy, ridiculous … he is totally nuts.’
Having long experienced many of the failed and disastrous policies that Donald Trump intends to force upon America, Europeans such as those attending the film festival are quick to be able to point out the sick fallacy in his campaign.
The European continent, for example, bore the brunt of the original Nazism decades ago in the World War II era.
