North Carolina is paying dearly for that hateful anti-LGBT bathroom bill of theirs as the NBA moves their All-Star Game from Charlotte to New Orleans.
Sports Illustrated reports on the National Basketball Association (NBA)’s bold move:
‘The NBA decided to move the game from Charlotte, N.C. because of House Bill 2, a state law that limits anti-discrimination protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. It could cost Charlotte more than $100 million in revenue.’
In a statement to the press, the NBA explains that while they can’t change hateful anti-LGBT laws like NC’s cruel and discriminatory bathroom bill — also known as HB2 — they can sure as heck choose where to host their All-Star Games.
‘While we recognize that the NBA cannot choose the law in every city, state, and country in which we do business, we do not believe we can successfully host our All-Star festivities in Charlotte in the climate created by HB2.’
New Orleans also hosted the NBA’s All-Star Game in 2008 and 2014.
But NC Republicans are perfectly happy to screw over their own constituents and tank their state’s economy. This notorious “bathroom bill” demands people use public restrooms that correspond to their birth gender and blocks local city and town governments from passing anti-discrimination laws. Since Gov. Pat McCrory signed that bill into law, the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority estimates Charlotte has lost more than $80 million in revenues. Oh, wait…With the NBA’s All-Star game gone, make that $180 million in revenues.
‘It’s at hundreds of jobs. And its economic impact in terms of millions of dollars in lost conference revenue, and we are nearing the hundreds of millions of dollars of lost community investment impact, and that’s just what we know.’
But ABC reports NC Republicans and Gov. McCrory still haven’t learned a damned thing after being humiliated by the NBA. Instead of looking in the mirror (does McCrory even have a reflection?), they blame losing the All-Star Game on the NBA.
‘On Friday, after the New Orleans announcement, McCrory’s communications director Josh Ellis said, “[NBA Commissioner Adam Silver] has no credibility in telling America that he’s more ‘comfortable’ playing a basketball game in the People’s Republic of China with its oppressive human rights record, rather than the 9th most populous state in the U.S.A.,” referring to upcoming games in China.’
Pat McCrory’s office then complained that the NBA’s withdrawal of the All-Star Game:
‘This is another classic example of politically-correct hypocrisy gone mad.’
The NBA hopes to bring the All-Star Game back to Charlotte in 2019, but the folks in the NC legislature will need to change that disgraceful piece of legislation first.
NC Republicans can complain about the mean old NBA as much as they want. But guess what? A CNN poll reveals they’re squarely in the mainstream. The Advocate reports:
‘Most Americans support LGBT rights in some measure and oppose anti-transgender bathroom laws, such as the one passed in North Carolina, according to a poll released by CNN on Monday.’
‘The survey found 57 percent of respondents were against laws which would require transgender people to use bathrooms that did not correspond with their gender identity.’
