The New York Post, which has both formally endorsed and supported Donald Trump’s campaign for the presidency as well as having oddly broke the nude photo “scandal” involving Melania Trump, broke a story today regarding long-time Hillary Clinton aide, Huma Abedin.
Abedin, according to the right-wing, Rupert Murdoch-owned publication, worked for a radical Muslim journal that opposes rights for women and blamed the 9/11 tragedy on the United States government.
The Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs, for which Abedin’s mother was and still serves as editor-in-chief, published an article by Abedin shortly after Hillary Clinton’s historical 1995 speech at the UN Conference for Women in Beijing in which she famously stated that “women’s rights are human rights,” entitled “Women’s Rights Are Islamic Rights.” According to the New York Post:
“‘[The] 1996 article argues that single moms, working moms and gay couples with children should not be recognized as families. It also states that more revealing dress ushered in by women’s liberation ‘directly translates into unwanted results of sexual promiscuity and irresponsibility and indirectly promote violence against women.’ In other words, sexually liberated women are just asking to be raped.
‘A conjugal family established through a marriage contract between a man and a woman, and extended through procreation is the only definition of family a Muslim can accept,’ the author, a Saudi official with the Muslim World League, asserted, while warning of ‘the dangers of alternative lifestyles.'”
Abedin’s mother has also published many articles that are interpreted to be sympathetic to domestic violence abusers and even justifying the abuse of women as well as roundly criticizing the very idea of empowering women. Huma Abedin previously stated in a Vogue interview that she will not apologize for her mother’s views in the journal or in her speaking engagements, saying that “My mother was traveling around the world to these international women’s conferences talking about women’s empowerment.” Abedin’s mother is widely regarded as a strong feminist speaking from the perspective of Muslim women.
According to Breitbart:
“An article by Huma’s mother after 9/11 claimed America’s ‘spiral of violence’ and ‘injustices’ created ‘a time bomb that had to explode and explode it did on September 11, changing in its wake the life and times of the very community and the people it aimed to serve.'”
Oddly, the statements made about women, modesty in dress, and families headed by single mothers or same-sex couples sounds fairly similar to the right-wing conservative platforms, and Abedin’s mother is not the first or the last person to say publicly that 9/11 was a response to US occupation and policies in the Middle East. Regardless, the latest right-wing conspiracy theory and talking point has surely just been born.
