Czech police have detained a suspect after he attempted to intercept Chancellor Angela Merkel’s motorcade on her way to visit with Czech Prime Minister, Bohuslav Sobotka.
A fully armed man driving a Mercedes 4×4 is currently being detained after he attempted to infiltrate German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s motorcade. The Chancellor was in Prague on her way to visit with Prauge’s Prime Minister, Bohuslav.
According to Josef Bocan, Czech police spokesperson said:
‘The perpetrator has been detained. He is suspected of attempting to cause a crime – specifically an attempt to use violence against an official.’
Upon landing in the city of Prague, a large protest of angry citizens greeted the German Chancellor. Below is a video of Merkel arriving to meet with Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka, after the suspect whom they believe intended to harm the German Chancellor had been detained. Despite the fact that her life had momentarily been in danger Merkel appeared unaffected by the event.
When Merkel’s motorcade made it’s way to to Prague from the airport is when the suspicious vehicle appeared and attempted to sneak into the motorcade. When police told him to back off he did not heed their warnings and continued to try and slip in to the motorcade. According to the police, the suspect was heavily armed but eventually surrendered after police threatened to shoot him.
Czech police spokesperson, Josef Bocan went on to say:
‘The driver of the Mercedes refused to obey orders coming from police cars accompanying the German chancellor. He tried to join the procession at all costs, cutting off a police vehicle that was trying to stop him. He only stopped and got out of the vehicle after police warned him they were going to shoot. Thanks to the professional actions of officers, Angela Merkel’s life was not in danger. The incident is currently being investigated by Prague detectives.’
It’s still unclear if this was truly an assassination attempt at this time but more information will be revealed after the detectives have had a chance to investigate the situation and speak with the suspect, who remains in custody.
