We know Donald Trump makes it awfully hard for staffers like Katrina Pierson to portray him in a good light. Still, the Trump-Pence campaign spokeswoman’s Thursday appearance on CNN deserves some kind of prize.
Katrina Pierson’s defense of Donald Trump’s bigotry and massive flip flop on immigration was so ridiculous, her co-panelists actually laughed at her.
It all started when CNN host Erica Hill called Mein Trumpf out for calling Hillary Clinton a bigot. She pointed out that if Katrina Pierson’s boss really wants to do things differently, maybe he should stop being a bigot and get the GOP to change its policies.
‘Would it not be more effective to go after the policies she said are oppressive? To go after the things that the Trump campaign would like to point out in their eyes are not working on Hillary Clinton’s side, as opposed to name calling?’
But Katrina Pierson assures us that the GOP candidate really is talking about policies.
‘Well, I think Donald Trump does both. And he makes his point when he says things like this. The people know what he’s saying, and he does talk about failed policies. In the last few speeches he’s given, he’s outlined those failed policies that have hurt communities.’
Alas, those speeches Katrina Pierson refers to only prove that Donald Trump’s the one who’s a bigot. But she insists Hillary Clinton’s the one who’s racist.
‘Particularly, Hillary Clinton goes out there and panders, she goes on a radio show and talks about having hot sauce in her purse. That’s pandering.’
Katrina Pierson adds that her boss is not your ‘typical Republican.’ She explains,
‘And Mr. Trump sees this as an opportunity to show Americans he’s not your typical Republican. A Republican that has not gone into the communities, because, I want to remind everyone, Mr. Trump, this March, went to Chicago. He went to take his message to the community and what we saw was destruction. That’s part of the reason he’s now just speaking to the public at all of his rallies.’
Does Katrina Pierson mean that unlike “typical Republicans,” her boss actually says all those racist and sexist things he thinks aloud? Probably not.
Erica Hill asks Democratic strategist Tharon Johnson what he thinks about Hillary Clinton calling Donald Trump a bigot. But he can only muster the energy to gently chide Hillary Clinton and say she needs to get back on message. Because there’s really no comparison. It’s one thing to say she’s “like your Abuela” and that she carries “hot sauce in her bag” like Beyonce (though Time says she really does). It’s another to say the outrageous things Donald Trump says.
Erica Hill then moves on to the distinct shift in Donald Trump’s message on immigration policy. CNN’s Amanda Carpenter (and former Ted Cruz staffer) pointed out that Trump had “duped” voters on the “issue they care most about” and that he’s managed to “alienate everybody on every side” of the immigration debate.
Katrina Pierson protested,
‘He hasn’t changed his position. He has changed the word he is saying.’
At that point, Amanda Carpenter couldn’t stop herself from bursting out into laughter, and the others stopped just shy of joining her.

Yet Katrina Pierson forged on.
‘What he has said from the beginning, he, no…He does not want to allow people to stay in this country illegally. He does want to build the wall but that’s exactly what he said from the beginning.’
But no, Erica Hill shot back. Donald Trump clearly said we need to deport all the undocumented immigrants.
‘Deportation force. So, now he is shifting. Katrina, there is a definite different message that we’re hearing now.’
But Katrina Pierson doggedly insists “There is not a different message.”
‘He is using different words to give the message because everyone on the news is saying that he is a bigot and that he is a racist because of the words he uses. Now he is simply saying yes, we’re going to follow the law, enforce the law, which ICE is immigration and customs, they do remove people from the country here illegally. He wants to start with the criminals.’
