Paul LePage, governor of Maine, was incensed when Representative Drew Gattine (D-ME) referred to him as “racist” after LePage’s declaration that 90 percent of drug dealers arrested in the state of Maine are either Black or Hispanic. LePage is the same racist who said last year that heroin dealers are coming from out of state and stated that:
‘These are guys with the name D-Money, Smoothie, Shifty – these types of guys – they come from Connecticut and New York, they come up here, they sell their heroin, they go back home […] Incidentally, half the time they impregnate a young white girl before they leave, which is a real sad thing because then we have another issue we have to deal with down the road.’
It isn’t difficult after that statement to understand why his insistence that the drug dealers arrested in his state are predominantly people of color would be interpreted as a racist comment. LePage never clarified if white men, who sell and use drugs at the same rate as any other race, are ever even investigated with the same scrutiny.
When a reporter told LePage that State Representative Gattine, who is openly gay, referred to LePage’s comments as “racist,” LePage decided to set the record straight by throwing some homophobic slurs at Gattine, so he left them on Gattine’s voicemail. Gattine denies that he ever called the governor a racist, but LePage didn’t stop to ask him before leaving the hate-filled message.
‘Mr. Gattine, this is Gov. Paul Richard LePage. I would like to talk to you about your comments about my being a racist, you (expletive). I want to talk to you. I want you to prove that I’m a racist. I’ve spent my life helping black people and you little son-of-a-bitch, socialist (expletive). You … I need you to, just friggin. I want you to record this and make it public because I am after you. Thank you.’
LePage himself leaked the voicemail to reporters, and added some more alarming statements to the mix while speaking with reporters from WMTU:
‘When a snot-nosed little guy from Westbrook calls me a racist, now I’d like him to come up here because, tell you right now, I wish it were 1825. And we would have a duel, that’s how angry I am, and I would not put my gun in the air, I guarantee you, I would not be (Alexander) Hamilton. I would point it right between his eyes, because he is a snot-nosed little runt and he has not done a damn thing since he’s been in this Legislature to help move the state forward.’
Is it any surprise that this is a governor who fully supports Donald Trump and his racist message of violence and bigotry?
