Last week Southside With You, a highly anticipated film about how President Barack Obama and our beautiful first lady met and fell in love, hit over 800 silver screens. This romantic comedy, starring Parker Sawyers as Barack Obama and Tika Sumpter as Michelle Robinson, is based on the couple’s first date in Chicago, in 1989.
The power couple first met while working at Sidley Austin, a law firm in Chicago. Barack, age 27, was working as a new associate that summer. Michelle, who was 25 at the time, just so happened to be his adviser. She was expecting the Harvard law student to be “nerdy, strange, off-putting,” but was taken by complete surprise.
Michelle said that Barack was quite bit cuter than she thought he would be, and that she was charmed. Obama was of course attracted to her as well, and strategically planned a date with his mentor by asking her to go to a rally with him.
Knowing that it would not look good for an adviser to date their colleague, she insisted that it was not a date, and decided to go to the rally with him. What she didn’t know, is that Obama had more planned than just a rally.
Barack’s grandmother advised him not to be late, which is what he was, as he nonchalantly pulls up to Michelle’s house in his beat-up yellow hatchback bearing a hole in the floorboard. She made sure to let him know that his tardiness was unacceptable.
The colleagues spent the whole day together. They went to the Art Institute of Chicago, had lunch next to a fountain in the museum’s courtyard, had a drink on the 99th floor of the John Hancock building, saw Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing,” and took a long walk down Michigan Avenue.
Michelle said in a CNN interview:
‘Probably by the end of that date, it was over. I was sold.’
Even after 24 years of marriage and two children, their love has not faded. Barack and Michelle still manage to exercise together, walk the dogs, and have dinner as a family — despite their busy schedules. The president still tucks his first lady in at night. Now that’s true love.
One thing is certain, the Obama’s will be greatly missed.
