Donald Trump’s camp is best at one thing – blaming other people for every problem.

Economic hardship? Blame the Mexicans!

Security concerns? Blame the Muslims!

Campaign running into the ground over the insanity of what Trump has said? Blame Hillary Clinton!

9/11-era mayor of New York City and prominent talking head for the Trump campaign, Rudy Giuliani, appeared this week on MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews to discuss the third issue raised above, namely, why the hell the man running on the Republican presidential nomination won’t say that President Barack Obama was born in the United States and is thus a legitimate president of the United States.

Early in the Obama administration, Trump was one of the main leaders of the far right claim that, indeed, Obama was not born in the United States and was thus unfit to serve as president.

It’s not just a technical matter, either. The “birthers,” led by Trump, founded their claim out of the same racism that fuels Trump’s campaign today, saying that Obama was an “African Muslim.”

On MSNBC this week, as Giuliani nervously laughed, Matthews began, “I have to ask you one last question, I know you don’t like this question but I think it’s appropriate given you are a major, as you’ve just demonstrated, a surrogate and defender of the candidacy for president of Donald Trump.”

Giuliani quickly went from nervously laughing to repeating over and over an only slightly more eloquent form of “she started it.”

Lines of reasoning on par for a five-year-old have been fair game for the Trump camp since Anderson Cooper called out Trump to his face for effectively giving a “he started it” back when the Republican primary season was still underway.

Matthews tried to make some sense out of what Giuliani was saying by asking, “Can you say authoritatively on behalf of Donald Trump that he was wrong in saying the president was born in another country?”

The answer, as it turns out, is no, but you have to pick through the gibberish that Giuliani responded with to find that out.

“I believe he picked up on what Hillary Clinton’s campaign said,” Giuliani responded, while Matthews’s jaw literally dropped.

The former New York City mayor, however, went on, saying that Trump “pushed Obama, Obama finally produced the birth certificate, and it showed he was born in Hawaii.”

Matthews’s jaw dropped because he had literally just gone over with the former New York City mayor that, no, as a matter of fact. the effort to paint Obama as a foreigner and thus unfit to be president did not start with the 2008 Hillary Clinton campaign.

To Giuliani’s credit, the former mayor isn’t the only member of Trump’s camp who stumbles over the birther question.

Trump’s campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway, told a CNN host this week that “you have to ask [Trump]” why the presidential candidate won’t say that Obama was born in the United States.
