Longtime television host Keith Olbermann has returned to politics this week, kicking off his new GQ web series, called The Closer with Keith Olbermann, by railing into Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
Olbermann began on Tuesday’s show, which was titled “176 Reasons Donald Trump Should Not Be President,” by framing the seriousness of the situation.
Indeed, although some far left voters continue to claim they don’t mind not backing Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton because a Trump presidency couldn’t be that awful, all the while Trump has continued to carry out what the subtitle to Tuesday’s inaugural episode of Olbermann’s show called a “15 month assault on American democracy.”
Olbermann began his show saying:
‘Every few generations we Americans are called upon to defend our country. To defend it not so much from foreign dictators or war or terrorism, but from those here who have no commitment to progress or Democracy or representative government, no commitment to anything except their own out-of-control minds and the bottomless pits of their egos.’
And of course, as the host quickly made clear while speaking for just over fifteen minutes about the atrocities of the Donald Trump campaign, Olbermann is referring to Donald Trump, the man who Republican voters found somehow legitimate enough to choose as presidential nominee.
The new GQ host spoke to Deadline about some of the reasoning behind the new show, saying of the online format that it is preferable because, although “[w]e sometimes denigrate voters, but the easiest group to spin are today’s TV folks. As in this case, they’re self-spinning.”
In other words, Olbermann says, the internet is the most effective forum for spreading legitimate information unencumbered by what weighs down major television news networks’ coverage of major national events such as the election cycle.
Seeing how Olbermann’s show fares will herald the return of a beloved left wing political voice to the formal media driven political discussion, and Olbermann’s return is just in time too, with just under two months left to go until Election Day.
Olbermann has spent decades in sports broadcasting, along with an eight year stint at MSNBC. The journalist has long made a name for himself as a left leaning and hard hitting political commentator.
