It has long been suspected that Shepard Smith of Fox News is the only honest and truly “fair and balanced” journalist working for the right-wing network. Smith has just proven it again when he ripped into Trump for failing to apologize for his disrespectful follow-up to the birther controversy he rode in on, and the ridiculous press conference that turned out to be nothing more than a commercial for one of the amateur politician’s hotels.
On Friday, Smith said the media had been “punked” by Trump, and calling him out on air on Fox News for the fake “press conference” during which the Republican nominee promoted his new hotel rather than addressing any of the many important issues facing the next president of the United States.
‘He did an eight-minute live commercial on all channels for his new hotel in Washington, then brought out American heroes to extol his greatness, then said the first black President of the United States really is an American citizen, gave no explanation for his previous statements to the contrary, or the reason for the change in position, then said Hillary Clinton started it, which she did not.’
During this “press conference,” Donald Trump claimed that it was Hillary Clinton’s 2008 primary campaign that originally questioned the birthplace of the president, which Smith also addressed on his news program.
‘There is no evidence to support the claim that Hillary Clinton or her team started the theory that President Obama wasn’t born in America. Zero, it never happened. Yet this is not the first time Donald Trump has accused the Clinton camp of exactly this, even though fact-checkers have debunked the claim, including the Washington Post, PolitiFact, and Factcheck.org.’
Smith then went on to acknowledge what most Fox News personalities normally wouldn’t admit — that it was Donald Trump’s birther movement, and his mission to discredit the first African-American U.S. president, that has served to alienate potential black voters.
‘That’s because the birther issue — illegitimate by any issue as a definition — questioned the legitimacy of our nation’s first black president and gives fuels to the “he’s not one of us” lies.’
It’s a wonder that Smith still has a job at Fox News, and it’s a wonder he hasn’t quit yet, but it’s also somewhat comforting to know that even the most conservative right-wing news network is open to some of the truth.
