During Monday night’s presidential debate, Donald Trump made a couple of different statements that sounded an awful lot like admissions that he doesn’t pay federal income taxes.
First, Trump essentially claimed during the debate that not paying taxes makes him smart. When Clinton was listing the various reasons that Trump might not have released his tax returns, she suggested that perhaps he isn’t releasing them because he doesn’t want voters to know he hasn’t actually paid anything in federal taxes.
At this point, Trump interjected, saying, “That makes me smart.”
The second potentially incriminating statement came after Trump spent an inordinate amount of time bemoaning the state the nation’s airports. He blamed the problems with the country’s infrastructure — including airports — on Hillary Clinton.
“It’s politicians like Secretary Clinton that have caused this problem,” he said. “Our country has tremendous problems. We’re a debtor nation, we’re a serious debtor nation, and we have a country that needs new roads, new tunnels, new bridges, new airports, new schools, new hospitals. and we don’t have the money because it’s been squandered on so many of your ideas.”
Clinton fired back at Trump, suggesting that the country’s poor roads, tunnels, airports, etc. are a result of him having gone years without paying any federal income taxes.
Trump responded by saying that his tax dollars “would be squandered, too.”
When Trump’s missing tax returns were brought up during the debate, he delivered the same excuse he has been using for months — that he can’t release his returns because he is under audit. Even when moderator Lester Holt reminded Trump that being under audit does not prevent a person from releasing their returns, he stuck with the same tired story.
Trump certainly has a history of saying potentially damning things and making messes that his spokespeople have to do their best to clean up the next day. After these less-than innocuous comments about his tax returns, it should only be a matter of time before Katrina Pierson is out there trying to say that Trump just misspoke or was misunderstood.
